CNN's "The Sixties" episodes started out giving me feelings of nostalgia, as I grew up in that era. The Beatles coming to America and all the great 60's TV shows brought a smile to my face! But then they started getting into the Vietnam War which I really didn't pay attention to until I enlisted in 1969 and spent a year there. I guess I missed the obvious bias of Walter Cronkite etal as they declared us baby killers. One of the CNN segments quoting CBS said US Forces were killing 25,000 Vietnamese civilians a year. Bull crap! Vietnam is when the so called "Rules of Engagement" started where we had to make the fighting "fair". More bullcrap. Anyway, to make point: this CNN series just shows us how bias the mainstream media is 40+ years ago and now.
I just saw Jersey Boys and remembered why I switched to country music in the 70s - once the music changed from great singers like Frankie Valli I lost interest. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack almost non-stop for over a week now! LOL
I’m from Alabama and loved the movie. In fact, in our paper yesterday they had a whole page article about the 20th anniversary of the movie. Winston Groom lives down here in South Alabama so we take pride in the movie.
I could care less about ANYTHING CNN airs.
I’m pretty sure CNN has NEVER been on any TV in my home!
The Left piled into their VW bus, drove up to Woodstock, got high and “checked out the groovy scene, man” and then the bus got stuck in the mud.
They still haven’t returned...
I already knew that. I saw it happen. I have not trusted network news since then.
Forrest Gump was the most intelligent character in the film.

Well.....for me there was one way to help.
I enlisted (U.S. Army) in 1969.
Sad thing was that without public support, or at least enough of it, Congress made it impossible to do much of anything to end the war except fill body bags. Moral sunk to a all time low.
The withdrawal occurred after I left, but it has always been a soured memory that I can’t reconcile. If it were not for Ronald Reagan’s understanding of this, and his unwavering support, I may not have survived the post war guilt and misery.

When he rescues his platoon - that was heroic and inspiring. When the hippie smacks Jenny and everything disappears to him as he comes to her rescue, wailing on that guy. Isn't that what we as men are suppose to do - protect the weak? LT Dan coming to his aid when the hookers are making fun of him. LT Dan's road to Damascus moment during the storm. LT Dan coming to his wedding on metal legs and a Vietnamese wife. I think it was one of the best films ever made.
And I agree with the Freeper who said Forrest Gump was the smartest character in the story.
Maybe my knee-jerk reaction to walk out on the movie after the Green-bow Al-a-BAM-a scene was too hasty. Other than the insufferable Tom Hanks, an extreme leftist homosexualist who's clearly on the side of the enemy, what other FReepers have posted will make me reconsider the film. And reading more about Winston Groom, the author, reveals that it's a good story in spite of the anti-American Hanks.
You are right on all counts. But, I think music was a strong contributor to the advance of drugs and cultural shift that may have not happened or been slowed to glacier speed had we still been listening to the Four Seasons, Chubby Checker and Leslie Gore.

Meh. The recreation of the physical look of the Sixties is great, but they try to work in too many politically correct lessons.

I saw the first episode of the CNN Sixties thing. It was about television in the 60s. It was okay.
But with all the 60s stuff on PBS all the time, was there really a need for CNN to get into the act? Point of view and politics aside, were they really going to do a better job?
Funny. Those of us who were military dependents generally don’t have an issue with being called “military brats”, at least any that I have known.

After all, he did leave Jackie with an incurable strain of gonorrhea. That Presidential clap is something he has in common with Bill Clinton. He also left Bill Clinton and the gay Kenyan the idea that a really smart guy like him and them could be a successful President working two hours a day once in a while.
