Gotta weigh in here...
I’m a Christ follower, so I’m not going to attribute this to anything supernatural. I believe it’s entirely something to do with body chemistry/electrical makeup.
I can do it. I hold wires which cross when I walk across a buried water line. I don’t know if it is detecting the water, but it works for plastic pipe, not just metal.
And, here’s the weird thing - everyone that is descended from my father can do it - my siblings, but not my mom; my children and nieces and nephews, but not my wife or my siblings’ spouses.

I have seen it work numerous times and have done it myself. It works for finding pipes, wires, water, etc. whether or not they are metal, plastic or other material. I always assumed it worked because of the slight disturbances in the magnetic field created when things like pipe or wire are buried and an unnatural void and break in the soil causes some sort of minute disruption.
Have no clue how it works, but it works. I have used the 2 steel rods to find buried pipes and water well location, successfully.
I knew a guy that could find buried gas lines with a couple of bent welding rods.
