BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. Around 28,000 chickens were killed Tuesday morning after a North Carolina farm caught fire.
Officials said it happened in one of the six chicken houses on Tom Moore Farms in Bertie County.
Fire officials said strong winds spread the fire quickly and the house was already destroyed when emergency responders arrived. The owner said the chickens were almost a month old.
There is no word on what started the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
WHAT THE CLUCK!?!?!?!?
They have no idea who started it..a pyro-maniacal fox
Anybody hungry?
A little quicker than when the fans go down and no alarm is triggered.
but of cuhs duhling have to increase the cost of chicken
pretty soon we will be scrounging for roots in the forest
That’s actually pretty damned sad...
Guy’s livelihood, work... income.
Times are hard enough. Hope the local folks rally and help him out.
Hope he had insurance.
You’re right. Fortunately it didn’t spread to the rest of the houses.
Not much meat on them bones.
RE insurance:
Probably a good bet that he does. Just sucks all around for him and his family.
Hard enough being a farmer and making ends meet, feeding your family, keeping the lights on and the roof overhead.
Hell... it’s hard for everyone to do those things right now.
Assuming these were chicks that he lost, that’s even worse; those are his future producers, and all the work that went into raising them, keeping them alive and healthy.
Again, I hope the local people rally around him and help him out. That’s what America is... fundamentally decent folks helping each other out when crap happens.
At least it always was when I was growing up.
“Thats actually pretty damned sad...”
Indeed. I was at a farm once about a month after 30,000 chickens froze to death one night after a power failure.
The farmer got tired of hearing the power alarm go off every time the lights flickered and turned the system off around 3:30am.
It went off for good sometime between then and first light.
Watch for the big sale on chicken mcnuggets or campbell’s soup.
I spent a lot of summers on my grandmother’s family’s farms in Chesapeake when I was a kid. All of her brothers and sisters had adjoined chunks of land.
Damned hard work. Long days and tired nights. People work hard for their living.
Sad to hear this stuff, but it’s part of life.
What’s the big deal here? If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
When life burns up your chicken coop, open a fried chicken restaurant.
It was a first class cluck-up.
“There is no word on what started the fire..”
Most likely a propane brooder.
Our neighbors chicken house burnt down with 50,000 chickens in it. I can not stand the smell of burnt feathers to this day. The only thing worse is when the dairy barn burnt down and the smell of burned hair from the cows permeated the air for days.
I guess they were broilers.
Campbell’s actually uses culled laying hens that no longer have the egg production of a younger bird.
