Friendlier to PC users than its prececessor, Windows 8.1 continues to eke out a higher share while Windows 8 slips downward.
Net Applications
Windows 8.1 is now more dominant than its predecessor, at least based on all desktop OS traffic seen by Net Applications.
For the month of May, Windows 8.1's share inched up to 6.35 percent from 5.88 percent in April. That gave it just enough of a nudge to steal third place from Windows 8, which earned a 6.3 percent share, down from 6.36 percent the prior month.
Windows 8.1's gradual ascension over its predecessor in the desktop market should hardly come as a surprise. Launched last October as a free update, Windows 8.1 added several features missing in action from the touch-driven Windows 8, notably a Start button, a boot-to-desktop option, and a way to sync the same background for both the Start screen and desktop. An update released this past April added more items to appeal to traditional mouse and keyboard users. Microsoft will try to further placate PC users with the return of a full Start menu, though that may not arrive until sometime next year.
In first place, Windows 7 took home more than half of all desktop OS Web traffic for the first time ever in Net Applications' stats, rising to 50.06 percent from 49.3 percent in April. On the flip side, Windows XP continued to lose share a little bit at a time, slipping to 25.3 percent in May from 26.3 percent the previous month.
The slow but steady rise of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 at the expense of the now unsupported XP is a promising sign, certainly in the eyes of Microsoft. For the past couple of years, the software giant has been urging users to upgrade from XP to a more modern operating system, either Windows 7 or 8. In early April, Microsoft finally ended support for XP, meaning that users will no longer receive bug fixes or security updates, putting them at greater risk to security threats.
Still, Windows XP remains firmly in second place in the desktop OS market. Responsible for a quarter of all desktop OS traffic, the now almost 13-year-old operating system won't be going away completely anytime soon.
To bad you made up something I’m not doing, if you have 8. update to 8.1.
I don’t care what your favorite OSs are, and I haven’t said anything 8.1 other than plenty of us like it, I do, I went from XP to 8.1 and like it and I don’t care if you do or not.
I do suggest that if you have 8, then update to 8.1, if you have some tweaks you want to make, and don’t know how, then google them.
See, that’s easy, someone determined to not update from 8 to 8.1 while complaining about 8, or someone who complains about “corners” and then clearly doesn’t care to know how to change the setting, has more going on than just a computer issue.
Gee, that was brilliant, my only other computer I ever bought still has XP on it, this new cheap laptop, my second computer purchase, came with 8.1.
Thanks for the input folks!
you suggested you UPGRADED from XP to 8.1 on the same computer. You never said on two different machines. THAT’S a HUGE reason people wouldn’t want to go with 8.0 or 8.1 if they have a newer computer and it currently has XP on it. No one wants the hassle of having to spend a day or 2 (that’s if everything goes smooth without problms) re-installing/reconfiguring the OS and programs.
Basically 8.1 is so great not all manufacturers or Microsoft itself hasn't made update to drivers.
Hell, now with 8.1 I get routine graphics card crashes and I lose my browser and it wipes out all my open tabs. I never once had a crash with 8.0.
Now my airplane mode F5 + FN shortcut no longer works and the Lenovo Energy Management no longer works in 8.1.
No, I was describing what I was posting on the thread, I was not telling you what you were saying.
I had read your post and you was correcting you about what I had been posting.
I don’t care about your computer problems, they don’t interest me.
Also the 8.1 problems have been occurring with no solution since October of 2013 and it is 8 months later with no sign of it being resolved and this is with several phone contacts to Lenovo and posting the problems on message boards and seeing other people experiencing the same problems.
Just because you like the Charms bar or whatever doesn't mean everyone else will. And the "google to get rid of charms bar" is not a complete answer as you still need to re-install a touch pad driver (in my case it is synaptic) and early on it wasn't able to turn off touch swipe an earlier version had that feature but it wasn't compatible with 8.1. Also it doesn't fully disable the charms bar from popping up if you point the cursor to the top right of the screen. Also, I had to utilize further means by settings within Classic Shell to disable the charms bar. This was all not just a simple type in to Google to find the answer. I find your condescending and demeaning tone repulsive.
Just read the post, it would sure save time. I DIDN’T suggest that I installed a new operating system on a computer, I said that “I” went directly from XP to 8.1, and that I have no complaints.

Lots of us say we like 8.1.
I went straight from XP to 8.1 and have no complaints, I like it better.

Good Lord man, I don't care, I don't even know what a "charms bar" is and I never mentioned it, why are you obsessing on me and telling me all your computer issues?
I did my personal tweaks within the first couple of days and have no idea what all that stuff you are posting is about.
Actually that is poor wording on your part as saying “I went directly from XP to 8.1 does imply it was an OS re-installation not that you bought a second computer with a different OS on it. You should have mentioned you bought a second computer. Leaving that out was your first mistake.
LOL, your jumping to conclusions and misreading everything is not my problem, my problem seems to be that are obsessed with me.
You are chewing up real estate with post after post, after post to me, about nothing for no reason.
Since you just keep making up things in your frothy rage, I would like for you to show me my quote on that.
You said in countless posts to others and myself that if you have problems with 8.1 then you must be stupid if you cant google the issue to find out the solution. That’s great if it were only that easy in 100% of the cases but it’s not but in your admittedly ignorant mind, you just don’t care, even when someone just proved you wrong and made you look like a fool.
"Countless Posts", funny you can't show me the quote for this new made up claim, nor any claims so far, and as far as "countless", each individual post is numbered and has the name of the poster, and there aren't even a 120 posts on this thread yet, so the times could be counted, in fact I count zero times that I said that.
With a name like mountainlion, I’m curious if you’re trolling?
Windows 8.1 is practically a requirement by Microsoft now. It fixes a LOT of the issues from 8.
I’m using 8.1.1 on my home machine and work laptop, and I’m growing fond of it. It’s very easy to create shortcuts for complex tasks, and being a PowerShell nerd, I love that I can script things like event log dumps and WMI data pulls.
Upgrade to 8.1. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for that tip! This will prove useful with my limited data plan when I travel and have to tether my laptop to the phone.
I didn’t have a reason to upgrade to Windows 8.0 but I sure wasn’t looking for one with all of the negative comments, mainly from Freepers. I thought Windows 8.0 was the devil without ever using.
Well I bought a new laptop with Windows 8.0, hated the Metro interface, installed Classic Shell, made a few tweaks to the settings and for the life of me I cannot understand the constant crying about Windows 8.x. I go back and forth between 7 to 8.x without any issues. I don’t think I’ve seen the tiles since day 3 of having Windows 8.0. I’ve upgraded to 8.1 and 8.1.1 without any issues.
