An energy company worker has been killed by a black bear at a base in the tar sands region of the Canadian province of Alberta, the firm has said.
The 36-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene on Wednesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police later shot and killed the male bear, which had remained in the area.
Bears are emerging from hibernation near the Suncor Energy Inc oil sands mining operation, 25km (15.5m) north of Fort McMurray.

Was the bear carrying Skittles and iced tea?
I think he got banned, but otherwise I’d wonder what that “bears are not aggressive” troll would say. I showed him a Youtube of some poor guy getting stalked by a Griz and all our boy would say was that he was “taunting” the bear. Sheesh.
Someone needs to have a talk with the Chinese bosses of Suncor to have a short but legal cylinder bore 12 gauge loaded with slugs there.
Probably a white Hispanic black bear.
Notice they put its race right in the headline. Would they do the same if it were a polar bear?
Very difficult for Canadians to carry guns for protection in the wild.
Not impossible, but difficult. Much easier for them to do it there than in urban areas, where the risk is actually much greater.
extrajudicial execution of the bear .. was it resisting arrest?
Waiting to hear from Holder if this was a hate crime?
Sometimes the bear messes with the wrong Canadian...

Yikes. RIP.
It’s not at all difficult for Canadians to carry long guns for protection in the wild. I’ve done so many times. Prospecting camps, etc. routinely have long guns for protection. Hand guns are another matter — pretty much how you describe it, in your second paragraph.
Why do you have to refer to the color of the
bear? Racist!

Good dog!
Rifles and shotguns are legal in Canada; handguns are not. However it is quite difficult to do your work sometimes with a long gun in your hand or slung on your back. Plus if it is on your back and you are surprised you may not have the mobility to access it.
And the gender of the victim is important how?
