REDMOND , Wash. A mother in Washington is upset after a teacher at her daughters middle school allegedly gave students an assignment that required them to pick cotton so that they could "see what it was like to be a slave."
Carolyn Walker called Redmond Middle School to inform them that her daughter would not be doing the assignment and later found out the teacher gave her daughter an F.
"My daughter is African American and for her to pick cotton when her grandparents were raised on a plantation to pick cotton, is not OK, it's not OK at all," Walker told KIRO 7. "It's not just about my daughter, all races should not have to participate in this. It's wrong, it's absolutely wrong."
According to the Lake Washington School District, the lesson was about the impact that the invention of the cotton gin had on the Industrial Revolution."
Walker has scheduled a meeting with the teacher and the principal where she will request that the cotton lesson be dropped from the schools curriculum.
I was wondering about that, as well. I was just going to post a question about how old her grandparents could possibly be?
Thanks for clearing that up.
What I don't know about Jewish traditions could fill a book.
“see what it was like to be a slave.”
Just keep voting for Democrats and you’ll find out, kid.
Soon.
Well, yes, her grandparents could have picked cotton but on farms. I don’t remember there being any plantations in the 50’s, which is when I remember seeing trucks go by, hauling cotton pickers to the fields.
My mother picked cotton on their farm in the 30’s and 40’s. Nobody called it a plantation.
I think your dad has a great idea, and I would love to hear about your cotton experiment.
So it would be OK to ask a White kid to pick cotton?
Bunch of filthy racists!
Now that is funny!
precisely.... they would have killed those trying to steal them away from their homes in Africa (who were in fact Africans and black)....but that would be wrong of me to say
Quick! Get her into the Guiness Book of Records for being the widest span of years between generations!!! Me thinks mama is protesting too much. Flat out lying, imo. Get over herself. Not doing the assignment deserves an F.
“My daughter is African American “
So is she African or American? A person can’t be both.
Oh her grandparents were not on a plantation. How old is this school age child, 102?????
BTW, my mother and her sibs picked cotton (not on any plantation of course, but as a sharecropper’s kid) and we’re white. Did you really think only blacks picked cotton???????
That looks like it’s from the era when my dad was a kid and picking cotton.
They couldn’t afford to take pictures of that though, these must be rich people :P
Well, this is the problem.
It's the picking of cotton that is made to be the issue instead of the fact that slaves were forced to pick cotton or die.
These people are so ignorant that they revere symbols[he had to pick cotton!!] to the exclusion of what's truly important.
Liberty.
I’ll try to remember to post an update to the garden thread. My mom and dad both talk about toting that big heavy bag from one end of the row to the other.
You think the sheriff could be everywhere, on each field? You’re funny.
