Woman Dies In Car Wreck Moments After Posting About 'Happy Song' On Facebook

A North Carolina woman died Thursday in a car wreck, apparently moments after posting on Facebook how much she liked "the happy song."

Courney Ann Sanford, 32, of Clemmons, N.C. was driving on Business Route 85 in High Point, N.C., when her car crossed the median and hit a truck, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

Sanford's car ran off the road and caught fire. She died at the scene. The truck also went off the road and hit a tree but its driver was unhurt.

Sanford had been wearing a seat belt but it wasn't on properly, police said.

Investigators ruled out drugs, alcohol and speed as possible causes of the crash, then learned later Thursday from her friends that Sanford had posted on her Facebook page at 8:33 a.m., High Point police Lt. Chris Weisner told WGHP. That was about a minute before authorities received their first call about the accident, he said.

The post read: "The happy song makes me HAPPY."

Remember that the average IQ is supposedly 100: for every smarter than average person out there, there’s a less intelligent than average person right next to them.

Occasionally, the gene pool self-regulates by using handheld devices while driving.

People who use their cell phone while driving are just plain idiotic. Especially texting. If someone calls me while I’m driving and it’s an emergency, I pull into a parking lot and call back. I never text or even talk while driving.

Seriously and no one said thank God she didn’t kill an innocent truck driver.

I always wonder about that, too. What about the poor innocent person driving the other way, minding their own business, who may have nightmares for the rest of their lives?

Really sad for her. Friday morning I drove over to McDonalds for an Egg McMuffin and a large coffee. The trip was a whole 2 miles and there were four traffic lights along the way. Twice (after weighting like 5 seconds) I had to honk at cars in front of me...stopped at a green light. I could tell they were both messing with some kind of phone/device.

It happens more and more frequently. I would say at least once a month I come up on a vehicle simply stopped it the road...yacking.

"From One Second To The Next" A Film By Werner Herzog – It Can Wait

I dare anyone to watch this and not shed a single tear; for the victims or for those who did some so stupid like text while driving, not thinking and not realizing how very dangerous it is and how their lives and the lives of those they killed or permanently injured, the lives of the families and their lives are changed forever.

I love my smart phone but I either keep it turned off or in my purse when I’m behind the wheel. No phone call, voice mail, text message or FB post is so important that it can’t wait until I’m no longer behind the wheel.

I happen to like the song Happy, it’s a fun and catchy song, but not so much that I would do the equivalent of shutting my eyes for over 5 seconds while driving just to tell people that. Think about that. Imagine your drive to work tomorrow morning and imagine doing it while closing your eyes for five seconds at a time every few minutes.

I drove Business 85 in High Point for years, it’s a very early stretch of interstate highway that has been bypassed by a newer, wider I-85 for through traffic.

There is very little median between northbound and southbound lanes, mostly just a concrete curb with a two-sided guardrail. It’s fairly narrow, rainwater runoff is not handled well, on ramps and off ramps are short, sharp and abrupt. Speed limit is 55 on that stretch, but it’s routinely ignored.

I’ve seen my share of accidents on that road. Most memorable was a fifth-wheel loaded horse trailer jackknifing and then going airborne. It skidded right past me on the other side of the median, whole rig on it’s roof. A dog was thrown out, I was sure it was dead. I was sure there were going to be dead people and dead animals. But, the dog got up and ran even while the wreckage was still screeching across the pavement. The people and the horses were OK. How, I really don’t know but I’m thankful that they were.

That’s just plain sad. Prayers up for the family and those injured. I won’t do the ‘I tolja so’ routine, and though I have contempt for those who insist on endangering others by using phones while they drive, it is still a miserable situation when someone pays the price.

Honestly, the absolute worst offenders are middle aged women.

For every 20 something I see operating the phone while driving ---I see probably four women aged 30-45.

IMO it’s considerably more negligent. A not too drunk is at least concentrated on the road and driving the best he can. Somebody texting or otherwise trying to operate their phone manually is completely distracted and by definition not paying attention to the road.

That said, I think banning talking on the phone, as such, while driving is idiotic. I see no way it’s any more distracting than conversing with a passenger.

And to think she might still be alive if she had been listening to “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty. Oh, I love the song, but in strictly measured doses. I’ve never had an urge to send a text message about it, that’s for sure.
