An openly gay chief of police has been fired by a South Carolina mayor who was caught saying he preferred alcoholics to homosexuals.
Crystal Moore, a 20-year veteran with the Latta Police Department, was relieved of her duties as chief of police on Tuesday following seven reprimands handed down by newly elected Earl Bullard.
The chief had recently discovered during an investigation that the town's parks and recreations director Vontray Sellers had operated a city vehicle with a suspended license.
During the probe, Moore found that Bullard failed to conduct a proper background check on Sellers before giving him the job.
On Tuesday, Bullard dismissed Moore, who is the Latta's first female chief of police and has not faced disciplinary action in her two decade career.
Bullard claimed Moore conducted a background check without authorization, questioned the authority of a supervisor and contacted 'news media to help bring about disorder and disruption to the town of Latta,' among other things.
But many in the community, including city officials, are questioning whether the real motive behind the firing was retaliation or the fact he allegedly doesn't like gay people.

There’s nothing better than Freepers for hilarity! Thanks!
Ok...... noted
We’ll try it ot
My eyes hurt.
From the pic it looks like she has three or four profiles at about 100 lbs. each...
If the woman has done a decent job as police chief in protecting the citizenry and seeing that the law is upheld, and hasn’t militated about her lesbianism in any official capacity, there is not a legitimate reason to dismiss her, in my opinion.
Sounds to me as if the new mayor has more problems than she does, and should be the one removed himself. She has a twenty year record unblemished up to now. He comes into office and it hits the fan.
Let see, a new boss comes in that you worry probably doesn’t like you. You go to war with him. Well if you don’t get him, you get fired.
I have seen it happen more than once. Sexual preference was never an issue in such matters.
I’m with you. Suppose the fellow with the suspended license has a wreck with the city-owned car he’s driving and injures/kills someone. The citizens of that city will be a long time paying off that lawsuit.
“and return Constitutional law enforcement to you duly elected County Sheriff. “
No thanks. Duly elected people haven’t been very positive for most of us these days.
.
Think we have the winner here - 'He's anti-gay? He'll be out to get me, I better find some dirt on him before he comes after me...'
Meanwhile, Mr Mayor who is paying off friends and buddies with random appointments suddenly hears from his police chief that the new parks director has a suspended license. And likely asks the normal question: Why would you even know that? And then writes up a reprimand for misuse of police resources which she then refuses to sign until she's consulted with her attorney.
I entirely agree with the writer's viewpoint that this was caused by sexual orientation, her's, but the firing by the mayor wasn't motivated by her sexual orientation. She assumed he was going to come after her, went after him first, and lost.
Hell, his 'anti-gay' stance is likely for stating that marriage is the union of a man and a woman in matrimony.
If that were true then not only would I expect the Daily Mail, hardly a conservative paper by U.S. standards, to mention it. And this being small town South Carolina I would expect it would have alienated much of the population. Neither seems to be the case.
There were verifiable instances of dereliction on duty, probably the tip of the iceberg. The fact that there had been no reprimands is easily explained by suffocating political correctness which looks away from self-proclaimed grievance groups, lawsuit-prone territory.
Were there? Then why were none of them reported and why did the city council support a derelict police chief?
Kudos to the new mayor, who apparently recognizes and proclaims the nakedness of the emperor
It's a matter of opinion which side has no clothes - the police chief and officer of 20 year standing with an unblemished record or the new mayor who hires cronies who violate the law?
I have no idea if you're right or wrong but a couple of things tend to make that doubtful, the major one being this town is in upcountry South Carolina east of Columbia which is an area which has been strongly Republican for a long time.
Any “crystal” that I know of would SHATTER from that photo.
LOCK HER UP!!! And DEFINITELY keep ‘her’ away from teenage boys, they have enough stress to deal with, even without ‘her’ advances.
I don’t care one whit about who she sleeps with. Does she do a good job? Was she fired for (legal) activities she does on her own time? If so, then she has been wronged.
Attorneys throughout the US are rubbing their hands with glee.
Wrongful Termination.
Civil Rights.
Anti-Gay discrimination.
Discrimination against Women.
etc.
Uh, the required background check on a department director who HAD A SUSPENDED DRIVERS LICENSE is most certainly mentioned.
The police chief performed that background check. The department director was brought in by the mayor.
During the probe, Moore found that Bullard failed to conduct a proper background check on Sellers before giving him the job.
Bullard claimed Moore conducted a background check without authorization,
It takes all of two minutes for a LEO to check out one's driving record.......
Since Sellers was driving city vehicles with a suspended license, that IS a serious offense and the fact that the city that hired him failed to do that basic check is even more disturbing........
It's obvious that Moore was doing her job, or rather, the basic check that someone in the city's HR dept. should have done......
The mayor does not have the authority to fire someone without due cause, and in this case, he obviously over stepped his authority. Moore needs to be reinstated and the vindictive mayor needs to be recalled......
You have a legitimate point, and I understand your frustration, but the Constitution is the only legal power we have. Move government closer to the Constitution, and the people have more power over that government.
She was probably only kept it office because female and gay.
Good lord right
If these clowns think this forum is gay friendly
They should ask around...
