An openly gay chief of police has been fired by a South Carolina mayor who was caught saying he preferred alcoholics to homosexuals.
Crystal Moore, a 20-year veteran with the Latta Police Department, was relieved of her duties as chief of police on Tuesday following seven reprimands handed down by newly elected Earl Bullard.
The chief had recently discovered during an investigation that the town's parks and recreations director Vontray Sellers had operated a city vehicle with a suspended license.
During the probe, Moore found that Bullard failed to conduct a proper background check on Sellers before giving him the job.
On Tuesday, Bullard dismissed Moore, who is the Latta's first female chief of police and has not faced disciplinary action in her two decade career.
Bullard claimed Moore conducted a background check without authorization, questioned the authority of a supervisor and contacted 'news media to help bring about disorder and disruption to the town of Latta,' among other things.
But many in the community, including city officials, are questioning whether the real motive behind the firing was retaliation or the fact he allegedly doesn't like gay people.

GUILTY!
I have been all over the internet, searching for the political affilitation of this mayor. Not one story mentions it, so it is safe to assume he is a Democrat.
Oh Gawd yes! But we shouldn’t hire a police chief based on looks.
I’ll bet she’s not even a particularly good one.
She would scare the hell out of any criminal!
How do you mess up being a lesbian?
The chief does not have the ability to undercut her boss with impunity. This would fall under the heading of insubordination. She should have been fired.
Let's hope the mayor has some asbestos underpants, as they will be coming for him.
Huh. She’s gay?
Gotta get my gaydar checked...
Isn’t that special. Thanks for coming out and trolling so early.

Usually the City Police Chief is changed when mayors are changed, they are mayor appointees. Especially if the party in charge changes. Even then that is not a reliable fact, the mayor will want his OWN crony in the position. They are trying to make it a sexual orientation one to stop the change the mayor wants.
A county Sheriff Chief is usually elected.

Has noting to do with job performance. Has every thing to do with CRONYISM!

for the record and completely off topic.......
I was served the best Bar B Que that Sumpter SC has to offer. It has some sort of noxious mustard concoction for sauce.
On a scale from one to ten, with ten being the best, the Sumpter stuff was -1.
I have relished scrumptiously delicious grade 10 Bar B Que from at at least two locations, The Ridgewood in Elizabethton Tennessee and Cooper’s Bar B Que in Llano Texas. So, I can measure a definitely inferior product.
She fits the profile.
I’m sorry for your bad experience. I don’t like mustard-based BBQ either. Next time you are in Sumter, try to find a Ward’s BBQ for some great tomato-based BBQ. Or, if you like the vinegar-based, try Brown’s in Kingstree (about 20 min away).
It doesn’t matter the career field, if you attempt to undercut your boss and are unsuccessful, it will not be good for you.
From Godfather II.
Frank Pentangeli: Those were the great old days, you know... And we was like the Roman Empire... The Corleone family was like the Roman Empire...
Tom Hagen: When a plot against the Emperor failed... the plotters were always given a chance... to let their families keep their fortunes. Right?
Frank Pentangeli: Yeah, but only the rich guys, Tom. The little guys got knocked off and all their estates went to the Emperors. Unless they went home and killed themselves, then nothing happened. And the families... the families were taken care of.
Tom Hagen: That was a good break. A nice deal.
Frank Pentangeli: Yeah... They went home... and sat in a hot bath... opened up their veins... and bled to death... and sometimes they had a little party before they did it.
