A North Charleston man was hit with a federal fine for refilling his drink without paying. The on-site construction worker says he didn't know refills at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston came at a price, and Wednesday, during his lunch hour, he was slapped with federal charges.
The ticket was issued by the Federal Police Force at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston after Christopher Lewis refilled his soda without paying the $0.89. A hospital spokesperson called it a "theft of government property."
"Every time I look at the ticket, it's unbelievable to me, says Lewis, who works construction. I can't fathom the fact that I made a $0.89 mistake that cost me $525."
Lewis is now out of a job.

$525 for soda refills. Is that where Bloomberg is operating these days?
This story reads like the parable of the rich man and Lewis...
Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lewis evil things: but now he is drinking a Big Gulp, and thou art tormented.
This guy is just amazed that the VA would consider it brazen theft.
WOW!!! Lemme see, for an 8 hr shift mmmm 300/8 = 37.5 tickets per hour which is 60/37.5 = writing one ticket every 1.6 minutes. This LEO is a ticket writing machine!

Like!
**Federal Police Force**
FEDERAL POLICE? We were warned FORTY YEARS AGO about the government wanting to have a FEDERALIZED POLICE FORCE! When did this happen!
I wonder if these government dining facilities meet MOOchelle Obamar’s food standards?
“Good for thee, not for me” standards shouldn’t just apply to schools, etc.
Anyone should know that the purpose of the misnamed “federal” government is to obtain “revenue” by any means possible.
If there was such a would you approve of the "ticket."
If so, you have Statistism in your DNA.
Even if there was a sign and he didn't note such, it doesn't warrant a ticket.
In a civil society he would politely be told there are no free refills and that he needs to pay.

This might be my fault in how I phrased the question and how he answered. Thinking back he may have meant that area rather than himself. I never thought about it. But they do have it down to an art form. There’s nothing to write down. They scan your license and the ticket prints automatically. They give you the quick options, a memorized speech of how and when to pay and how to take and pay for the course to eliminate points if you’re eligible. Or, he might have been yanking my chain. He seemed pleasant enough. And, everybody I know who drives that route has had at least one ticket. (My former boss goes miles out of his way to the interstate as he always wants to go fast and they stop you here for 7 miles over.)
Highly questionable. 24 hrs x 60 min = 1440 min/day.
1440min/300 tickets = 1 ticket every 4.8 minutes and presumes a 24 hour shift. In an 8 hr shift, he'd have to average well under 2 minutes per ticket.
Mickey Dee's has had free refills for years, as do most establishments with self serve drinks so while I don't know the mind of the worker it is completely plausible that he did not know he had to pay for refills. Had he been warned before, or had he refused to pay I can see the ticket but to go full jackboot on what could easily be an honest mistake speaks to just how out of control Feds and Cops have become.
For an 8 hour shift, that’d be one every 1.6 minutes, minus daily briefing, getting in and out of the car, turning in the tickets, and other misc activities.
Perhaps 300 tickets a month if that was all they did.
:: I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm ::
If that “fella” was not an authorized peace officer or officer of the law, then he should be chatrged with assault and Bubba should have decked him. Even if he was a cop and didn’t identify himself, he should get decked.
The same response I gave to the last guy who rightfully mentioned the time element. (I never questioned it.)

It's funny how you did NOT comment on the other facts presented in the article a bit earlier: someone grabbed his armed and asked if he was going to pay... but the fascist didn't allow him the opportunity.
It would be normal for someone to respond in a "strong" manner when someone just "grabs their arm."
Agressive is the word of the officer stated, not necessarily the reality. I am sure the police were polite and respectful --lol. I would believe Mr. Lewis over some aggressive thug with a badge.
You need to get your head out your a** and try to perceive the reality that more and more fascists in government are sadistically abusing citizens.
Our Founders knew the type of person most attracted to government employ -- vile, corrupt and sadistically inclined.
Most in government now truly view the citizens, especially taxpayers as their enemies.
Yes, a warning and make him pay the 89 cents for the refill would be reasonable. If they had warned him before, I’m sure that would have been reported. Of course it’s not to late for them to think of that and claim that he had been previously warned. Check for updates on this story.
WTF??!!!???
He was denied the chance to pay, which he offered. The officer who wrote the ticket is am imbecile......................
