What is your crazy "get in trouble as a kid" story?

Posted on 04/12/2014 6:32:44 PM PDT by MNDude

Almost everyone has a story of something where did something so dumb and crazy as a kid that their parents ground them for a long time. Rode the family horse to town? Let a homeless guy sleep over in your parents bed while they were out of town? What is your story that you're lucky to be alive after your parents found out?

Can’t believe I am going to tell this one.

When I was 13, one night a couple of my friends and I were hanging out. We notice that someone is trying to drop from the roof onto the 6th floor fire escape. He lowers himself and is holding on to the vent with one hand, the roof with the other hand and his foot is trying to touch the top of the handrail.

We start yelling jump. We don’t know if he is trying to break into an apartment or if he doesn’t have his keys. I bet I could hit him and we pick up rocks and start throwing them at him. All of a sudden, he lets go, hits the railing feet first and tumbles 6 stories into the bushes. We hear the thud. Will never forget that sound.

Not knowing whether to run away, see if he is alive or run to find a cop, we are frozen, looking at each other like we are in deep doo doo. All of a sudden there is rustling in the bushes and the guy stumbles out of them and limps off. We are now laughing hysterically.

Turns out his girlfriend locked him out of the apartment and he was trying to get back in.

At 14 we were big fans of 'Combat!' which is where we got this idea .

Using the transformer for an old train set, we ran wire from the side of the house out to the sidewalk where we buried the ends wrapped in steel wool with the fuse of a 'Black Cat' firecracker stuck in it. Switch it on and the fuse would light .

It was Halloween and when some kids would come down the side walk ....POW....Somebodies Father saw us and chased us down the alley...we lost him just barely..

My mom (RIP) talks about the time her mom told the four girls to get ready while she got a switch from the lilac bush. Her mom walks in, switch in hand, confronted by bent-over bare bums ranging in age from 7 to 14. My mom recalls her breaking down in laughter on the floor!

I would run around the house to try to get away from my spankings. Running through the kitchen once I grabbed a flat tin pot cover and got it shoved into my pants. I’m guessing I was five or six.

Visiting my mom before she died we were going over some of our antics as kids. She didn’t recall that one with the lid - but she did say “Well, I remember spanking you one time and my hand REALLY hurt! Maybe that was it!”

(And no - I didn’t tell my mom a week before she died ALL of the stories!). Sorry mom. I suppose you know them now! Thanks for a great life.

I have a photo of me strapping a flag pole with an American flag on top of a 60-foot pine tree that was in our backyard. I was probably 14 at the time. And my MOM was taking the picture! What sort of mom lets their kids DO stuff like that!!??

Not enough bandwidth to list em all.... Sanctioned or not I would be tried as an adult and shot against the court buildings wall were such adventures repeated in today’s PC liberal world......

Suggestion...never ever let a 13 year old boy know that dynamite is / was used in cemeteries and where it is stored.

Stay safe !!

It was June of 1966. I was driving home from college and it was around 10 P.M.. There was no traffic at all and I had opened up my old 55 Ford. It was in high and overdrive and the speedometer was reading 110.

The old Ford was running as smooth as silk. As I got closer to Defuniak I began to notice little puffs of fog. I can remember thinking to myself that I had seen no fog at all until then.

Suddenly as I came over a little rise, everything went totally blank. I was in a fog bank so heavy it was the same thing as being blind. I hit the brakes and felt the right front wheel just go off the pavement. I pulled back to the left, not hard enough to cause the car to skid or overturn.

An instant later I was in the clear and could see a flashing red light in the rear view mirror. My immediate thought was that I was dead and that was an emergency vehicle at the scene.

A few seconds later I realized it was a mosquito fogging truck. He had been in the same lane I was in going 110. Somehow because the brakes pulled to the right, I over corrected enough to pass him on the left.

It took around 10 minutes for it to really hit me. I had survived what should have been an unsurvivable situation. To this day it seems like it never happened but it did.

I still wonder how it happened.

I’ve never been in trouble.

“Looking back over the thread, fire and explosives seem to be a common denominator.
The fifties and sixties were indeed better times to grow up in.”

Indeed. I suspect stories told by today’s youth might be something like “we we’re playing XBox when my buddy pulled out some weed. We all smoked it and mom and dad never knew we were playing Xbox high.”

Too many to sort out the best in a short time. I can truly say I was considered a rogue.

I wonder, do kids do that anymore? (the boxes, not the oil!)

Well, I will be the first to say that the Japanese were so foreign to me, their culture, everything, that it was a constant source of baffling and non-standard (to me) behavior!

Suffice to say that for an eight year old gaijin kid, Japan was a very strange place. Odd toilets that you had to squat over...open sewers...the smell of fish...large groups of people walking around wearing face masks, pachinko ball machines...restaurants with bizarre plastic food in the front windows...

But one of the oddest things to me was that whenever an aircraft carrier came into port, there would be these HUGE demonstrations outside the base.

At around 9:00 AM several hundred Japanese riot police would assemble in a field near my house, then on cue shortly thereafter, the crowds would assemble outside the fence near the main gate with banners and megaphones...I seem to remember large groups, but it might have only been 500 or even a thousand. They would get vocal and demonstrate for a while, then again, on cue, some of them would go over and begin climbing the fence. The fire trucks inside the base parked nearby would begin spraying the demonstrators on the fence with fire hoses, knocking them off, then they would begin spraying the other demonstrators through the fence.

Shortly thereafter, the demonstrators would disperse, the area would be quickly cleaned up, and when the water evaporated, there was no indication that anything had transpired.

When I think of it now, it seemed like one big, huge, ritualized kabuki dance. Everyone knew their roles on both sides, the whole thing went down like clockwork, and then it was over until the next time.

I remember my brother and I going over and talking to a bunch of the Japanese riot police, and inviting them back to our house after the demonstration was over. We went into the cabinets and opened up a bunch of cans of stuff and poured them into bowls. I recall that we had maybe ten bowls of things like chick peas, corn, whatever.

My mom came home, and politely told the Japanese guys to leave, which they did. I have no idea what my mother thought of that. I think she must have thought we were just crazy.

Not getting caught story:
During summer between my 7th and 8th grade, I and 4 of my friends wanted to play a joke on a dork at school. We went to the library and filled out hundreds of magazine subscriptions to go to his house. After getting every magazine there, we then looked through catalogs for whatever items free or for charge we could send to his house (I distinctly sending a box of 100 Bibles to his house). One friend went to a porno shop and ordered every magazine and thing they had there. (We spent many many study halls filling out these slips)
I remember when we had a stack a foot high of order slips we began heading to a big blue mail box I started getting a very bad feeling about it. “Uh, maybe we shouldn’t do this?” Too late. Larry dropped them all in.
The night before 1st day of school, this kid’s dad called my dad (like he called lots of dads that night) and was furious saying he had to hire a team of people to contact all these companies to cancel all these orders.
My dad never asked if we did it, but said the police were doing an investigation. I felt sick to the stomach.

The first day of school our principle called all the students of school to the gymnasium. We thought it’d might be a rally for the first day of school, but he was accompanied by the kid’s dad and he began how serious it was that had happened and whoever it was would be suspended might have charges filed against them. I felt my heart stop and I could imagine the sweat dripping down my friend’s faces.

Amazing we were never individually interrogated or I’m sure we would have buckled quickly.

The dumbest thing I ever did was when I was 16. Me and another guy was riding around in his SS 396 Chevelle. We picked up two girls. He got in the back seat with one of the girls and let me drive. Sitting up front with me was this hot cheerleader named Cindy Wilson. It started to rain. She said “Don’t you think we should park somewhere and wait for it to stop raining?”

I said “Nah, driving in the rain is no big deal.” I defy anyone to top that for stupidity!

I think you win the prize. Of course it would have been better if you and her were the only ones in the car.
