Friends and family will be able to take the first step to save a loved one from an overdose of heroin or powerful painkillers called opioids.
The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved an easy-to-use device that automatically injects the right dose of an overdose antidote named naloxone before an ambulance arrives. Doctors could prescribe it for family members or caregivers to keep on hand, in a pocket or a medicine cabinet.

The FDA has waaay too much control, when the libs were bitching about how expensive birth control pills were during the Sandra Fluke debacle, they never even considered what would happen tot he price if the FDA allowed Birth control pills to become over the counter when their side effects are LESS that other over the counter drugs like Acetaminophen.
Of course the big gov libs would never consider common sense as a solution to something like so called “expensive drugs” it is not like the chemicals that make birth control pills are super complex and hard to make.
I think the drugs the FDA has a strangle hold over that they are NOT allowing to become OTC (even if the side effects are less that some major OTC pain relievers ) is because they get kickbacks from cronies and politicians who are in both groups. If certain drugs were made OTC the wind would be taken out of the sails of the “Manufactured Crisis” that Politicians love to use to further cement their power.

In a REAL “War on Drugs” drug shipments would be intercepted, poisoned and then sent on their way and more PSAs would say that drugs are poison because they are intentionally poisoned!
Instead we get no knock raids and the law abiding citizens get their rights taken away...
If someone is at the level of overdosing on heroine, wouldn’t it be a wasted effort to try to save them?
and if you are the unfortunate one who gets a mistaken no knock raid and retrieve a weapon for protection, you will be killed by these ‘ninjas’ with no compensation for your survivors...

Chronic back pain, Cancer and a whole host of other reasons none addicts might need to use prescription Opioid. Not a bad thing to have around in a worst case scenario.

I've seen life from a perspective that few middle (or upper) class Americans enjoy.I worked in the ER of a large hospital (one located in a major city) for 20+ years.This was an unusual hospital.Located in an inner city section of a large city,many of our "clients" were "poor" and minority.But as a world famous hospital we also saw the rich and famous both from the local area and from around the globe.So I literally encountered everyone from Saudi royalty to the dregs of American society.
As for the hundreds and hudreds of junkies I dealt with...many of whom had no pulse when they hit our door...I can assure you that Darwin had a good point when he proclaimed "only the strong survive".
I could go on...but won't.But know this:this nation is *far* better off without junkies than with them.Even if that means death for junkies.

Actually, it’s the WOD that causes overdoses in the first place. (In countries where heroin addicts can get a supply from a clinic, OD’s are almost zero.)
What happens is that the drug pusher cuts his heroin by a certain percent and the addict becomes accustomed to that dose. In one example, the pusher gets wind of a raid and wants to get rid of his stash fast and sells everything uncut for a night or two without telling the addict.
So the addict shoots up their normal dose and it’s several times more potent than what they can handle. OD’s tend to hit the ERs in waves and this is why.
With the gov’t heroin programs, the addict gets what they need to feed their addiction without theft or risk. It saves the hospitals a ton of money by not having to deal with OD’. The addict doesn’t share his stash because he’s only getting exactly what he needs. The pushers are left without business because the addict doesn’t need him and has a less risky alternative. Theft and other property crime drops. With the lack of pushers and the addicts’ not sharing what they’re given, fewer addicts are created.
In countries like Saudi Arabia, where the punishment for doing drugs is death, they still have plenty of addicts. We’re not going to stop the drug problem with harsh penalties.
So have zero sympathy for any and all abusers. Got it. Good thing Rush got cleaned up or you’d have wished him dead, sadly.
I stand by my question. If some dirtbag herioin addict is overdosing, are they really worth saving?
