'A shot in the dark'
A private British satellite company used a wave phenomenon discovered in the nineteenth century to analyse the seven pings its satellite picked up from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and determine its tragic final destination.
The new findings led Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to conclude that the Boeing 777 ... crashed thousands of miles away in the southern Indian Ocean ....
Radar pings from MH370, automatically transmitted every hour from the aircraft after the rest of its communications systems had stopped, indicated it continued flying for hours after it disappeared from its flight path from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
From the time the signals took to reach the satellite, belonging to the UK firm Inmarsat, and the angle of elevation, Inmarsat was able to provide two arcs, one north and one south that the aircraft could have taken.
Inmarsat's scientists then interrogated the faint pings using a technique based on the Doppler effect, which describes how a wave changes frequency relative to the movement of an observer, in this case the satellite, a spokesman said.
He said: 'We took Malaysian 777 airline data and modeled that against the northern and southern path and what we discovered was that the path to the south is undoubtedly the one taken.'
Asked why it took so long, he said: 'We have been dealing with a totally new area, we have been trying to help an investigation based on a single signal once and hour from an aircraft that didn't include any GPS data or any time and distance information so this really was a bit of a shot in the dark and it is to the credit of our scientific team that they managed to model this.'...

None, zero, zip.
Oh . . .but the dear professor is being outdone with this morphing narrative:

This dumbass headline makes me so angry. All science stands on the shoulders of previous science. Stupid, stupid sensationalist UK media.
We are all taught ancient mathematics in school, and its awesome, but not amazing.
I think the headline was for the benefit of the Malaysian PM who referred to the Doppler analysis as “NEW”.
He needs to go back to school — they teach it in 6th grade.
Agere contra, many thanks for the link!

All y’all pinging to this link and the excerpt below; the author posits that the pilot turned the plane toward thailand/andaman islands and made a demand that the opposition leader be freed or else/by a certain time, and Malaysian officials refused, so he ditched the plane:
“...For the Malaysian authorities this would be a political disaster. Malaysian Airlines is state-owned. If they botched the negotiations with Shah, they would own a big part of the blame for that. If its true that the charges against PKR leader Ibrahim are trumped up, its even worse for the UMNO-led government, which is struggling to maintain power. The dead Chinese citizens on board are also a big problem for the government. Again, they were business men, not peasants on vacation.
China is not going to be happy with an Islamist governments railroading an opposition leader and getting Chinese nationals killed in the aftermath. A full disclosure from the government that this hijacking was a political act intended to secure the release of a wrongly convicted opposition leader could reignite sectarian violence in the country and topple the majority government. When you look at the Malaysian governments parsing of information, or the outright falseness of it at times, I cant help but conclude that their government may not want to ever disclose what really happened.
Very interesting and plausible theory but there was no circling over the Andamans as the plane made a bee line south from there according to professor Doppler.
Yeah, next headline we'll see:

The problem that many people have in UNDERSTANDING the news reports and the MISTAKE that many make is that they think there is someone “behind the scenes” — writing a script that the various news agencies are putting out. And if there is a group “writing all the reports” for all these news agencies — then yes, the “narrative morphs”.
But that is not what’s happening. What is happening is that you’ve got various people and groups and agencies — EACH ONE having their own idea about what happened. One is interviewed and the other is interviewed. The public hears one thing, and then another thing, and then a third thing, and then a fourth thing — all because no one has any ABSOLUTELY DEFINITIVE ANSWER.
It’s still a mystery as to what happened to bring the plane to this location.
NOW ... if the news agencies interviewed you, they would get one story from you. If they interviewed me, they would get a different story. If they interviewed 10 other Freepers — they would get probably TEN MORE VERSIONS. You ALREADY SEE THIS right on Free Republic.
Do we say that Free Republic is “changing the narrative”? No we don’t because we understand that Free Republic is not ONE PERSON WRITING THE SCRIPT for public consumption. And neither is this the case with the worldwide news agencies.
Actually it was “Inmarsat” that said they were doing something new on this analysis.
It's obvious that almost all of the reporting is pure speculation and to be taken with huge casks of salt.
I haven’t seen any reports of it.
But the significance of this analysis done by Inmarsat and the AAIB (UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch) is that it narrows the search field and allows all the resources to be concentrated in one limited area - and thus increases the chances of finding that very thing.
The whole thing stinks to high heaven.
It's how the "new media" works. Speed and novelty is prime. Gaining audience share trumps accuracy. Sorting all that out is the great benefit of what we can do here.
I cannot imagine my cyber life w/o Free Republic.
Well the Malaysian PM was introduced to Mr Ping a week ago but ignored him, and just yesterday he was introduced to Mr Doppler — to his dismay.
He now has two new friends that I’m sure he wishes he had never been introduced to.
Thank you for the context. This could be true, but its likely just a coincidence, considering the Page 2 mentality that comes out of that island, and especially the Daily Mail.
