Computer help, please (vanity)

So I'm downloading a Microsoft security update (at microsoft.com) and I get a message: Do you want to update to IE8? Why not, I says to myself, so I check the box. Well, something went wrong. My Favorites, Tools, etc. line has disappeared. And right-click no longer works when I'm online. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you update your computer’s graphics card too.

Try putting the mouse cursor over that spot and hitting F10. It’s a long shot...

This might be slightly different from what you have already tried. Method 3 is the one for Windows XP users. Crossing my fingers!
Here's the link!

DId you actually reboot the computer? Installation isn’t complete until you reboot.

If I switch to Firefox or Chrome, will things look that much different? Not much different although things may be in a different spot. You'll have to do some customizing (but you do with IE too) to select search engine, etc. Tool bars are done the same way.
Chrome is probably the easiest and fastest.

System restre won’t do it.
The new IE thinks it is part of Windows 8 (the worst OS since ME).
You now get to go through the fun of trying to figure out where they hid the User Interface (such as the File toolbar).
Start by right-clicking in the upper left and see if you can find the “Toolbars” selection - turn on “Menu Bar” and the old menu will come back.
I agree Firefox is better UI and Chrome is tons faster — download them and keep IE for pure business essentials.

To me they look more like IE than IE does.
It won’t be a huge change.
Chrome is the easiest, especially if you remember the address bar is also the search bar.

Don’t right click the Web page ... right click up in the gray area where the menus were.

Yep, tried that. Right-click doesn’t work anywhere, including in the grey area.
And for what it’s worth, I did a quick Google search. Others who have “upgraded” to IE8 report the exact same problems. But I can’t find any solutions!
Thanks for trying to help.

Suppose I move over to Chrome. What happens to my Favorites list? Do I have to build it up from scratch again? Does Chrome even have a Favorites list? Thanks.

goto Control Panel, then click Add/Remove. Check “Show Updates”, Click on the latest IE Update, then click remove. Hopefully this should help. Try removing in the “Safe Mode” if the firt method doesn’t work.
A nice slimmer and more secure browser is Comodo Dragon (based on Chrome).

Thanks for the suggestion. When I tried to uninstall IE8, the uninstall stopped and I got a message asking me for the location of vgx.dll.000.
I did a search, and vgx.dll.000 (whatever that is) is not on my computer. And I cannot find a way to get it on my computer.
There has got to be a way to get back to IE7, but I sure can't find it.
Thanks for trying to help.

When I installed it, it imported my favorites from fire fox. You can install another browser without removing ie. Load one and see what you think.
