The bacon on the first picture looks wayyy overcooked.
While people have differing preferences on cooked bacon, I agree with you that bacon can be ruined if it is overcooked. It needs to be cooked on medium low heat, slow and easy, keeping it pliable and not crisp. The problem is most people are in a big rush and turn up the heat and wind up overcooking it. Another thing bacon should be sliced thick, which helps to keep it from getting overcooked.
