Spike Lee went on a long-winded rant against gentrification in New York City on Tuesday night when he was asked to argue against the development of poorer neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Harlem.
The director, who has focused on racial issues and gentrification in his films, blasted an audience member at the Pratt Institute who started defending the changes in the neighborhoods.
'Let me just kill you right now,' Lee said to the unidentified questioner.
Lee pointed the finger at white New Yorkers who have moved into historically black neighborhoods and changed the environment, arguing that those changes have caused the areas to evolve into something completely different.
'Here’s the thing: I grew up here in Fort Greene. I grew up here in New York. It’s changed. And why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers in the south Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Crown Heights for the facilities to get better?' he said.

On Monday night, I swiped some Diet Coke from the church kitchen so I could stay awake to drive home, but I replaced it on Tuesday ;-).
He does seem to be harboring an excess of hostility.

We’re at the church so much that it seems like we live there ;-). I caught my daughter Sally coming out the kitchen with a cup of soda after Mass a couple of Sundays ago, and I said, “You know you’re not supposed to help yourself out of the kitchen.” She said, “Vinnie Mantione said I could.” I said, “If Vinnie Mantione is in the kitchen giving you permission to snarf sodas, I want to talk to him ... because Vinnie Mantione is DEAD!”
Well, it turns out he’d given this hypothetical permission before he died, not that it would surprise me if he haunted the church kitchen ... but anyway, since Tom and I drank most of a 2-liter bottle on Monday, I replaced it on Tuesday. $2 at Harris Teeter! It’s only $1 at Walmart!

30 years ago I moved into a neighborhood in which .... well, let's just say I was a little outnumbered. Outnumbered like the grain of salt in a pepper shaker. I had wonderful neighbors. No complaints on that score.
The neighborhood gradually changed. The newcomers, mostly white, were the fixer-uppers. The shift from primarily renters to primarily owners was a big part of this. I'm not sure that race had much to do with it.
So according to Spike Lee Blacks should live in Black only ghettos where the culture of pimping, gangsta rap music and drug dealing can flourish. Businesses owned by Whites and orientals should be blocked and no attempt should be made to clean up these areas, rid them of crime and provide opportunity for employment by attracting new businesses.
We’re an interesting parish ;-). A kitchen haunted by a ponytailed Italian Knight of Columbus would be ... no surprise.

Isn’t this Lee character the one who tweeted what he thought was the address of George Zimmerman after St. Skittles died? Is he the one who tweeted that Zimmerman should be killed? Or am I thinking of some other big-mouthed racist?
