SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLORIDA - All Gilberto Powell, 22, a five foot tall man with Down Syndrome, wanted to do was walk a half block home from a friend's house, but this was enough time and distance for the police to intervene.
Police "followed" Powell because they noticed a "bulge in his pants." He was not happy to see the cops; this was only his colostomy bag (which police ripped from his body). Powell was then beaten down in the street by police, leaving him bruised and battered from blows to the face.
The beating officer insisted Powell ran, but Powell disputes this and said he did everything he could to comply. When Powell's mother asked the cop if he could tell her son had Down's Syndrome, the cop said he wasn't a doctor.
Powell said he felt "helpless" and wants an apology from the police. He also wants to community to be aware that this could happen to YOU
Your words and your attitude on this thread are possibly the stupidest I’ve ever read on Free Republic.
I doubt that “doc” even understands the meaning of the words “free” and “republic”.
More importantly what was the 4th amendment and 1st amendment issue?
Those just go out the door at the whim of an officer?
What right does he have to detain anyone on the street, forcibly search them and beat them?
Was there some exigency for his exerting authority under the color of law?
Without reasonable cause or an exigency he had no right to so much as detain him...
Unless he was disabled and clearly inferior to the officer who normally patrols his “territory” with vigor...
He’s dead Jim...
Well, that’s the real tragedy, isn’t it?
I don’t believe you have any more of a background in Law Enforcement than than me and I spent four years as a Sheriff Explorer.
Rode patrol, did the whole family fights things, gang bangers arrested, drunks, rapes, worked in three different jails(required after every three ride alongs), worked in the Bailiff, transport, search and seizure, security for various events including that nut case Huey Newton of the the Black Panthers, spent summers with DEA, FBI and Mutual Aid from neighboring counties, search and rescue and even pulled my Mom over one night as she was coming home from work.
I did everything you see on the show COPS and more.
I don’t believe you are or were LEO and if you were, you left under estranged circumstances.
There is no way you can read this story and come to the conclusion the LE was in the right.
Further, Google this ass hat and you learn he has a history demonstrating he is not one bit suited for Law Enforcement.
I don’t think with what I’ve learned Paul Blartt would serve with him....
No Shiite!
Finally, a real cop who knows reality.
I was only a mere Sheriff Explorer but, as I state in my post above, I was very involved and I wanted to do everything.
Ultimately decided LE wasn’t my purpose in life and have nothing but the highest regard for a very thankless job, that LEO’s somehow continue to find meaning in doing their job day after day.
I don’t think Doc was a cop and has even less experience than I...and I suck....well, maybe not suck but, I do have a sense of right and a hang up about the Constitution.
;-)
Another of his screen names?
And why wouldn't he be allowed to carry a gun?
Yes cops should just beat down everyone who has stuff in the pockets. Lets start with YOUR FAMILY!
Just curious, do you support the Second Amendment or not?
If yes, why are you defending this?
Judging by your posts, you are a nightmare to the community you work. I wouldn’t call you for assistance if I was being shot at.
You defend cops that terrorize and kill. You always defend cops and are a perfect example of the blue line that thinks they are better than us.
Its sad, isn’t it. I feel safer with gangbangers around than with cops.
doc ALWAYS defends cops matter what.
I’m wondering if doc is a troll. Look at his profile.
Please explain your usage of this phrase and the meaning behind it.
If you are alluding to Matthew 7:1, you had best be sound in your exegesis lest it be revealed that you miss-handle the Word...
Ever wonder why some u of us don't care for cops? People like YOU!
