SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLORIDA - All Gilberto Powell, 22, a five foot tall man with Down Syndrome, wanted to do was walk a half block home from a friend's house, but this was enough time and distance for the police to intervene.
Police "followed" Powell because they noticed a "bulge in his pants." He was not happy to see the cops; this was only his colostomy bag (which police ripped from his body). Powell was then beaten down in the street by police, leaving him bruised and battered from blows to the face.
The beating officer insisted Powell ran, but Powell disputes this and said he did everything he could to comply. When Powell's mother asked the cop if he could tell her son had Down's Syndrome, the cop said he wasn't a doctor.
Powell said he felt "helpless" and wants an apology from the police. He also wants to community to be aware that this could happen to YOU
What? Because someone disagrees with you and can see that a kid with Downs Syndrome and wearing a Colostomy bag should not be beaten down and his bag ripped off?
Seeing and understanding that somehow in your mind makes me or any of these other folks cop haters?
What I hate is when innocent American citizens, who are harming no one fall victim to ANYON who is a thug and willing to violate their rights. I do not care if the thug is a thief, a street thug, or a police officer or politician.
Get a grip man. The kid was not arrested. Let me repeat, he was not charged with ANYTHING, or arrested.
He just got a beating for his trouble.
If you really worked in law enforcement...and have any feeling for the constitution of this nation and the rights of its citizens, this should make you so sick to your stomach that you want to puke.
As it should any American, from whatever walk of life.
I would hope you would simply step back, consider it...and apologize for taking the wrong side in this. There is no dishonor, or anything wrong with that.
No. Not. Negative. If the kid shot someone or threatened someone with a gun then he would be subject to arrest. In the old USSR, perhaps this would all be justified. Actually in the bad old days 40-50 years ago beating up on retarded people was considered by some to be great fun and cops in some places did that from time to time. So we are so advanced and humane now.
I suspect this cop is not so retarded that he did not recognize the signs of retardation. He had fun. His mistake was in not then shooting the kid or beating him to actually dead.
Retarded people certainly don’t have the right to bear colostomy bags.
It all comes back to the same imperative. The cop should have shot the kid. After all he is a 'tard and all. Gotta get him outa the gene pool. Say, are a real lefty troll or just playing devil's advocate to point out obliquely just how heinous this sort of thing is?
“And if it had been a gun? What then? You would be speaking out the other side of your mouth and condemning the police for not acting.”
So what? Was he in the acft of committing a crime? Let’s just shake down everybody that looks supicious. BTW, I think you look suspicious.
The cop is over 20 years old. He has run into Down's Syndrome before. He was not in error. He knew what it was and what he was about. A little bit of fun on an otherwise boring day unless he is perhaps determined to purify mankind like Margaret Sanger wanted to do.
!
I am glad I was not in your jurisdiction. Did you make FR ever? or did your service end before the folks on FR began to notice the SOP thuggery of modern cops?
And then for you to say that all you were trying to do was bring out all the cop haters. What are you a little child? Grow up! Am sure even thats to late for you.
2 men in Arizona, actually, by the same cop.
“right now in this country, we have an epidemic of people running from the cops.
LOL!
I can’t imagine why....”
ok, you got me on that one. but watch shows like “the first 48”,or even cops, and you can see the problem we have with people not respecting law enforcement.
personally, I try to make a distinction between the new militarized, homeland security type policing, and good local cops trying to do their job. those inner city gangstas have no respect for our laws and we shouldn’t make it easy for them to run from the cops.
“And if it had been a gun?”
That was my very first thought - what if it HAD been a gun.
Specifically - MY gun that I have a Right to carry. And somehow made even more of a right by the piece of paper in my wallet.
I've heard plenty of that bullcrap before.
Here is how it goes...
Whenever someone defends the cops some drooling idiot calls them a "bootlicker."
Whenever someone condemns the actions of a cop some drooling idiot calls them a "cop hater."
New Mexico, actually. Deming County.
No cop haters came out.
Just constitution followers and believers in the bill of rights.
Not that you understand those things evidently.
