An online petition to save a healthy young giraffe from death has failed, despite thousands of signatures from animal lovers.
Copenhagen Zoo said it euthanized the male, named Marius, on Sunday because of a duty to avoid inbreeding.
After an autopsy, "Marius" was dismembered in front of a zoo audience that included children, and fed to the zoo's lions.

Argh.
Tap-danced right into that one, I did.

I would love to try giraffe. I bet they have the ultimate back strap.
Just what I was wondering! Why didn’t they neuter the animal? Idiots!
Yo, guys... I AM a woman and.... EWWW!
LOL. We were on a road trip to visit relatives around 1962 and my nine year old sister said “Look at the cows playing over there.” We were doing 65, so exited the area pretty quickly, too. I don’t recall Mom & Dad saying a thing.
China's all over this for you. Sorta.
Sorry, I humbly disagree. The way you stop bullying, (well at least the way we did it back in school) is to beat the bully within an inch of his life. It stops it in its tracks. And usually the other bullies will knock it off.
No more bullying and he will teach his kid not to bully.
Seems they could have raised money for the zoo by having it butchered and selling the meat. Some exotic game meats go for a lot.
Problem kids, like wild animals finding their way into human habitats, will be dealt with in similar ways, for similar reasons.
Why didn’t they just put it in the lion cage before killing it and let the lions do what come natural?
LOL
Sorry.
So am I.

“From the article, it basically said that the animal would take up space needed for more viable members of the population.”
I can just see the same reasoning coming for people, as obamacare progresses... “useless eaters” syndrome.
Sarah Palin was right, deathpanels are coming for people too.
Sounds like a warning to the Danish population. If they find you superfluous, they will kill you.
Giraffes can’t shoot.
I would have assigned that job to the lions.
Perhaps they did not want the little kiddies to know that LIONS EAT ANIMALS! (and people, if given the chnace)
Well alrighty then.
A British zoo offered to take him. People raised $680,000 to buy him. But this crap zoo insisted on killing this poor animal who had grown to trust them, had never known anything but a kind hand from them—so they could publicly dissect him for pseudoscientific reasons and then feed him to lions? This “zoo” should be closed for cruelty to animals.
But they apparently are allowed to kill what they "govern". Let the Danes take note - if you are "governed" you too can become a vessel of superfluous genes and become a science experiment for the public.
Meanwhile all the children who watched with their parents will likely consider practising on pets at home. Endorsement doesn't end when you leave the zoo in the minds of children.
Good cause to avoid Denmark and the Netherlands in general, as well as all imports.
