The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning's hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. 'We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes. Then we figured out the hand signals for a few of the route audibles in the first half,' he said.

Thing is, they blame the Hawks for not “playing fair” or they only won because they cracked Manning’s hand signals. Okay. But then Manning is held responsible for not figuring out that after a few plays the Hawks knew what was going on. But he kept to his hand signals and the Hawks figured it out.

The Patriots would've gotten a clue and changed their signals at half time. I LOVE IT when brain outsmarts brawn.
As long as no video was recorded no rules were broken. It’s not the Seahawk’s fault Manning became predictable.
Sherman is an idiot. The LAST thing that you announce that that you’ve cracked the opponent’s code.

Of course. If through your own hard work and observation you can tell what the other guy is going to do it’s his problem, not your.
Now that doesn’t include the Patriots using hidden cameras to record the other teams practice or the Yankees having someone in the stands steal the other teams signals and radio them to the dugout ... those things are still illegal.
Why? It doesn’t matter now. It’s unlikely Demver would use the same code next season anyway, even if Manning does come back.
This would explain a lot, I’m just surprised someone like Manning didn’t recognize that their signs had been compromised and adjust accordingly. Surely the Seahawks aren’t the first to try and decipher Manning’s signals.
Why not? What Belachek did was tape the NYJ defensive signals, from the coach to the players on the field. It would be easy to play the tapes against broadcasts and be able to anticipate blitzs, fake blitzs, etc.
This is like stealing signs (without using the centerfield camera) in a baseball game. Somehow, I doubt that Sherman and his backfield Benchley Park decoded the hand signals “over the board” (as chess players say). More likely the coaches studied tape. If Denver used the same signals all season long, they are mugs and deserve what they got.
From the descriptions of the process, Denver must have been exceptionally clueless Sunday. They spent the first half watching the signals, and calling out their predictions, before settling on the meaning somewhere in the second half. They had to hear some of that, or notice something was up. Seattle had shut down Denver’s offense fairly well before that point, so I doubt it made a whole lot of difference until the substitutes started to play.
So consider this...
Peyton is supposedly mulling retirement. Put yourself in his shoes. If he does indeed retire, it might be construed that he did so having realized his primary audible technique was usurped. One could argue that for evermore, he’d be the guy who cut and ran when his techniques were exposed.
In truth, I actually think Sherman is actually just playing around and the Seahawks didn’t actually decipher his audibles. I think it’s simply gamesmanship. But if it’s true, I think it would make Manning have to return for the 2014 season.
Just think if Belichek had left the Pats after they were found out to have been cheating with the video recording. It would have stained him further. While it’s a little different with Manning, quitting now makes it look like he’s realized he’d lost his competitive advantage.
That may be, but not sure that would have even mattered. The D line and linebackers brutalized the Bronos O-line, and Manning usually had two guys on him and one guy in position to put his hand on the ball pretty much every down. There was no pocket throughout the game.
I have always loved that the reason the Patriots were caught was that the Jets used their camera, which was being used to do the same thing, to record the Patriot cameraman.
I also heard that the password to Peyton’s computer is 123456.
I don't see any way that it could be disallowed. Defenders cover pass routes -- If they get their coverages right, they defeat the opponent's passing game. The coverage chosen is based on any number of factors - down and distance, offensive formation, quarterback (and coach's) tendencies. Figuring out the quarterback's changes at the line is just part of making good defensive adjustments. It's up to the opposing quarterback to counter those adjustments (which Manning obviously didn't do).
