Microsoft claims to have seen "record sales of Windows Phone this holiday"
Neowin ^ | 01/09/2014 | John Callaham

Microsoft is using CES 2014 as a venue to give an update on sales of Windows Phone devices to members of the media. There was already evidence that products using the OS have gained a lot of sales and increased market share in Europe in the past few months and today Microsoft said that it saw those sales increase even more during the recent holiday sales period.

In a statement sent to Neowin by a Microsoft spokesperson, the company said:

We’ve seen record sales of Windows Phone this holiday worldwide, nearly doubling phone sales during Christmas week (YOY). In the third quarter this year, according to IDC, Windows Phone reinforced its position as a top three smartphone operating system and was the fastest-growing platform among the leading operating systems with 156% year-over-year gain. Windows Phone is the #2 smartphone operating system in 14 markets, and shipped more units than iPhone in 24 markets in Q3. Our portfolio continues to expand: from award-winning flagship devices like the Nokia Lumia 928/1020/1520, to affordable new innovations like the Lumia 520/625/1320 and Huawei W1/W2.

Microsoft says the 14 markets where Windows Phone is currently the number two mobile OS are:

India

Mexico

Italy

Chile

Thailand

Vietnam

Malaysia

Poland

South Africa

Ukraine

Hungary

Finland

Czech Republic

Greece

The 24 markets where Microsoft says Windows Phone devices out-shipped the iPhone are:

Chile

Colombia

Czech Republic

Egypt

Ecuador

Finland

Greece

Hungary

India

Italy

Kenya

Kuwait

Malaysia

Mexico

Nigeria

Pakistan

Peru

Poland

Saudi Arabia

South Africa

Thailand

Ukraine

United Arab Emirates

Vietnam

As usual when Microsoft provided an update on its Windows Phone division, the company did not offer any specific unit sale numbers of those devices.

I can only tell you that I’ve my phone for four years and used it continuously and it hasn’t crashed. Most Apple Users and Android users can’t necessarily say that.

I'm in to old cars, and am on a lot of car forums. Whenever someone asks about shocks, people come out of the woodwork to proclaim Bilstein shocks required to have a decent ride. Its complete BS. Why should someone pay 4X what it costs to by new shocks equivalent to what the car left the factory with? Particularly for a car that's a weekend cruiser!

My point is that some people need constant reaffirm their past choices. They need validation that, yes they were smarter than everyone else.

Right you are.

Geze! I Can say that!

P.S the iOs is quite stable. It does not ‘crash.’

I’ve my phone

I’ve my phone
I’ve my phone
I’ve my phone

I’m sure there’s an app to prevent freezing and crashing. :)

You da bomb @ smart phone os’s!

P.S. If you do have a four year old Windows phone, it’s NOTHING like today’s phones.

I think this comment sums of the situation pretty accurately:

“so no real stats, just empty, unproven statements of sales and perceived market share. Yup. Confuse the consumer, pump false PR about phone sales and stats. Never trust MS when it comes to being upfront. They are basically just low balling the cheap, entry level markets in underdeveloped countries to gain traction, but higher end smartphones is where they lose to android and iOS in the developed world.”

Dont bother with the anti MS crowd here. They are convinced all MS produces is crap and they will argue to the death to prove their myopic point. FWIW I dont own a ms phone or tablet...sold my windows rt for the note 2014 edition...but in all honesty I really wish I had kept the windows tablet..it blows iOS and android out of the water for productivity and ease of use. But the anti ms tards will cry about gui..even though they likely never used it more than a few hours at best.

Oh, I know that. Under no circumstances will they give Microsoft credit for anything, no matter the progress or even when Microsoft might actually be ahead on a point or two.

My Windows phone is the Nokia 710 that I bought in April 2012. My mistake on that point. I work a lot of hours, so my sense of time is a bit skewed.

However, it still works like a charm and it has never crashed once since I got it. I bought it because I knew that Microsoft had to be willing to eat dirt and offer a great phone for a cheap price if it wanted to break back into the phone market and it followed through.

Whatever I need to do, I can do it without having to resort to searching on the internet for instructions.

I will, however, probably upgrade to the next incarnation, whatever that might be.

I’m intrigued by the ASUS hybrids. I have used windows for decades, there are programs that I use regularly that I cannot find on any other platforms. Unfortunately, I am not a Metro fan and there are now Android apps that do things in a way I like better than on a Windows computer.

I frequently have a Transformer and PC laptop both open in front of me going back and forth. I’m not sure if the new ASUS will do exactly what I want but it could be cool. The Android in a window would be even better but from what I’m reading Google and Microsoft both will try to cut it off at the knees.

I was just looking at one. Interesting concept..I will take a step back and see how it goes. 18.1 inches is just too big to be an effective tablet Imo.
