great point about CNET, but since I use Linux their add-on’s are kind of pointless.

25+ years and counting Corporate IT guy here. One thing I see is missing from the comments is what are you seeing? If you can take a screenshot and post it then please do. If you can’t then please describe when this pops up and what does it say. If we can narrow it down to a specific virus, malware, or adware, then it will make it easier for us to help you get rid of it.

I invested $200 in the Geek Squad...the best money I have ever invested. I have 3 machines and have spent hours with the Geek Squad...far more time than if I were being charged $35 an hour. I will reinvest next July when my program expires.

sorry carlo. i think you’re going to need some experienced help for this (i.e., IT).

computers can run in several different restricted modes. the most unrestricted mode is what you normally come up to when you boot (i.e., from turn on the power to when the computer is operational). that is what “safe mode” or supervisor mode is. it is the baseline operation of the computer (os) with no extranous programs being allowed to run. my computer runing windows can be placed into safe mode by holding down a combination of keys while “booting.” the way to boot in safe mode varies for each computer.

your computer comes with factory installed software (programs, like email or word processing), to which normally you add/install your own favorite programs to do your work on the computer.

now an unauthorized agent/hacker/website is adding software to your computer from a webserver (a computer that allows downloads to yours) or other infected computers on the internet. that is a virus which is trying to do you harm.

you or someone knowledgeable (my next suggestion for you since you are “tech illiterate”) can use the configuration utility software that comes with your computer to manually uninstall or disable, unwanted software to keep your computer safer.

hopefully this will help you manage determine whether the person helping you knows something about what he/she is doing.

“I’m not sure I have properly explained my situation here.. I am COMPLETELY TECH ILLITERATE.. “safe mode”, BOOT-UP, stop/disable.. Wait, WHAT?.. Bhahahahahhaha..”

When I get in over my head I call in professionals. Take it to your local puter shop and explain the problem. They can likely clean it up for a c-note or less.

To find your downloads, click the Start button o the bottom left of your laptob, you should see 2 lists. The left side is a list of programs and the right should have things like
Documents, Picturesn Music. At the top should be your name you used to set up the laptop. Click that, then find downloads and click that.

Search for the programs you downloaded to fix. You will need to click them to install.

Maybe you should take some responsibility to educate yourself, all these things you find confusing and are illiterate about can be learned simply be typing in google “what means Boot computer” and so on.

There is no excuse for not knowing the things you posted:
“safe mode”, BOOT-UP, stop/disable..

SpyBot S & D Free

Run in Admin mode (Right click the Icon after install and select that)

Update then run System Scan & when done close any open browsers (IE/Goggle?Firefox) and run Immunization.

Then download ZoneAlarm Free and let it update/self configure and then Scan with the Free AV.

FreepMail Me for links to get Downloads the easy way.

Will be waiting for results/update.

Good Luck!

Hijackthis.com

They got me out of trouble years ago with one that would re-spawn on reboot. Had to use killbox.

Oh dear Carlo.....some people who have been around technology for a very long time have a hard time relating to people who don't have as much knowledge or experience in the subject. We all have our areas of expertise, and yours are well documented here on FR.

As one who was in your shoes and is now on the other side of things - (I am Microsoft Certified in Desktop Technology as a part of a re-career move I took 5 years ago) I'm sure all the advice thrown out here only adds to the confusion.

Having done my fair share of virus cleanups, I'd advise you find someone with desktop experience in your area to help you. Some of these infections are tenacious, and you need a few tricks up your sleeve to know how to beat them. I wish you the best!

Thank you dear girl for understanding.. I used some the the advice and found my downloads and already started the scans successfully and am almost finished..

Spybots, and Avg are doing wonders so far.. But I agree, I need to get a pro to get me cleaned up and set straight.. What would I do without my FRiends.. Bless you all, and HAPPY NEW YEAR.. Carlo
