I am so sorry to take up space with such a stupid question, but my grandkids used my laptop, and computer over the Hollidays and must have picked up some tragic viruses on both of my computers..

I have downloaded Ccleaner, and Sophos Virus Remover, and some registry cleaner, but I still have problems with Pop-up, and slow..

HELP PLEASE!

I am having a problem with pop ups, phony links, phony tabs and phony windows popping up and being very slow at times.
My PC guy said it was advertising people showing the website owners how many hits they were getting. He couldn’t fix it. Yes I an looking for another PC guy.

Your browser should point you to your download folder. What are you using?

If things get bad, burn a linux rescue CD:

HijackThis! is very effective but also very dangerous. It’s like doing brain surgery.

Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy are OK to use.

Make sure your hardware and software firewalls are configured properly.

detail is no good here, here’s an outline of what i would do:

if you have another computer (friend), get your virus remover(s) from there. keep your own computer off until you are ready to clean it. looks like several good suggetions already. malwarebytes is good and simple to use offline and you can put it on a thumb drive.

run offline in “safe mode” (mimimal boot up with no applications running, just the os). run several virus checkers offline. then try to come up to full user mode and check again. finally go on line to a protected site, then get the latest virus update and check once more.

stop/disable any service or startup app that you didn’t install. unisntall every app, toolbar, whatever you didn’t want or install yourself. boot again.

take note of your “clean” state and continue to remove anything that deviates from that state unless you installed it.

1. try the malwarebytes and kaspersky.

2. after both of them run, do a windows restore to a point before your gk’s touched your pcs.

3. get a used, laptop you never use, for them to use, and set accounts on it with limited permissions.

That’s what you get by having grandkids. (Birth control comes free with Obamacare, courtesy of taxpayers.)

You need more than one. I’ve got several programs and they each find different dangerous items. Definitely Avast for virus protection and removal - lowest carbon footprint of such programs on your machine (I mean memory occupied.) SUPERAntiSpyware, and Spybot, at a minimum for malware. Others are Glary Utilities, Wise Registry Cleaner, IOBIT Malware Fighter, Advanced System Utilities, all of them highly rated by various editors and users. And free.

One note: don’t use CNET’s download.com come as your source, it wraps the programs into their own spyware giving, junk loading downloader. majorgeeks.com is an excellent source of freeware.

If you didn’t tell it where to put them they are probably in a downloads folder or maybe Program Files.

Sounds like your computer was hijacked.

Try Malware Bytes and turn off the wifi in the meantime, while it does its thing.

Also, if you can, run it on startup before a lot the nasty things have a chance to load. Once they do, it can be impossible to remove them.
