LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police in Orange County Tuesday were asking for the public’s help in recovering a stolen bike worth $10,000.

The Scott Genius 710 bike was stolen on the night of Nov. 23 from the back of a pickup truck parked in the underground garage of the Inn at Laguna.

“The bicycle is a custom build, and all paint and decals are custom,” Det. Matt Meadows said.

Anyone with information on the bike’s whereabouts should contact Laguna Beach police at (949) 497-0701.

I’d be willing to give fair odds to one or more of the the following:

1. Camera or DVR was not working. It hasn’t worked in months and the owners probably didn’t even know or wouldn’t pay for repairs.
2. Cheap cameras just barely show you shapes and maybe skin color but no recognizable features.
3. Thief was smart enough to know where the uncovered entrance is.

If you ride several thousand miles per year, you can appreciate a high quality carbon fibre bike with top of the line components. It is all about the experience. Aerodynamics, handling, weight, acceleration, predictability, etc.
Sure for some it is about bragging rights and having the latest and greatest, but for for this rider, the difference is real!

$2000 is my absolute breaking point. I bought a Surly Long Haul Trucker off a guy on Craigslist for $950 and am a happy camper. It’s amazing how expensive bikes can be!

I can sypathize — I have an expensive mountain bike. Not $10k mind you, but expensive enough. This bike actually is rare enough that the mountain bike community will assist in keeping an eye out for it. I’d hit up all the local mountain bike forums for everyone to keep an eye out on the trails.

Either that, or someone needed a DUI cruiser and it will be parked at the local bar.

Some combination of the above.

The real idiot is the one who left the bike in his truck.

He won’t be doing that again I’ll bet.

Back in the 1970’s we bought a brand new three bedroom two bath house for $15,000 and worried at the time about spending so much money. I just can’t imagine someone spending $10,000 for just a bike. Says something about some of the people today. But then again it’s bigger boys with bigger and more expensive toys.

Probably stolen by an obama supporter — maybe even one of his sons.

More likely three or four of the vermin: only community intelligence is adequate to such complicated, high risk tasks.

I’ll bet that the dolt who left the bike unsecured in the pickup overnight either did not have it insured or the insurance company won’t payoff because it was stolen due to the owner’s negligence. What an absolute moron.

They need to look for it in the basement of the Alamo.

If I had a bike even half that price, you’d better believe it would not be left unprotected like that.

I am still biased to inside job though. I lived in an apartment building about 20 years ago that had every single apartment on my floor broken in. 20 apartments in all. Stole jewelry, electronics, cash stashes, everything. Right after the last of us had gone to work for the day. And nothing was really disturbed in the hunt for items. It was almost as though the perp knew where everything was without having to search.

A week later the super shows up in a ~$60K brand new car.

Shocking, I know.

I just don’t see 10k worth of bike there. I ride about 100 miles per week on my mountain bike, and I like to drool down at the bike shop as much as the next guy. But it seems like there’s a diminishing return on bicycles after you get over about 3k.

Looks like a Scott Genius model. Clearly the owner was not.

I paid $10,000 for my 2004 GMC Yukon with the chrome “liberal-catcher” hooked to the front, otherwise known as a brush-guard.

Don't get me wrong. If money were no object I would probably be on a bike "north" of 10k but the reality is that unless you competing at a very high level, the difference between a bike that cost 10K and 4-5k will never really be appreciated.

My Giant TCR Advanced was just over 4k and although the ride is softer due to the frame being CF and the Di2 shifting a bit crisper, there's not too much to point at that I would say makes it a better bike than my 2k Cannondale CAAD10 3 (Aluminum frame).
