This is greeneyes’ daughter. I have lost the password to my account, but I told my mom that I would post here for her so that no one would worry about her.
She went to the eye doctor today, and they dilated her pupils. She is not supposed to drive for a couple more hours. So, she is cruising around the Super WalMart, where the vision center is, trolling for Christmas present ideas.
She will return to her regularly scheduled garden thread later tonight.
God Bless!
Hello. First time poster here. Any recommendations for dent corn for home-gardening? I’ve tried “Bloody Butcher” in the past. Bought an inexpensive grain mill and enjoy making my own corn-meal for corn bread. Thanks in advance.
NC garden update. We have been fighting really cold nights for the last couple of weeks. Below 30’s which has become quite unusual for our area this early (Piedmont). Last year only had a few weeks like this in January/February. So far the fall garden is surviving under floating row covers and 6 mil plastic but it has been a pain covering and uncovering. We have collards, turnips, spinach, kale, onions, snow peas, and carrots. Will try to post a pic taken about a month ago after we put up a few “cold frames” for the row covers. It has grown a lot since then.
What we don’t eat we give to the chickens. They are doing better since we insulated the cracks and vents in their coop. One of my girls is in the chicken hospital with a broken toe. She is being “discharged” on Sunday.
Our last project was a three chambered composting bin made out of pallets. Turned out pretty good and we have a full bin “cooking” and hopefully ready by spring. Our next project is a series of raised beds made out of 4X6 timbers. Found them for $10 a pc on Craigslist and picked up enough to keep us busy all winter. They were originally used to hold up guardrails and such along side the highways and are being replaced with metal. Cheap and no creosote either. Should last a good while.
Best wishes to all. Happy gardening...Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Christmas! (I will try to post a pic of the garden (img src=http://rs892.pbsrc.com/albums/ac128/jordansjourney/Mobile%20Uploads/2013-11-06_16-16-30_209_zps6baa0f10.jpg~320x480;>
Here is some ginger planted earlier this summer. What doesn't show up in the picture is I planted a couple starts and now there's probably a dozen stalks. To the right is probably some cauliflower. I labelled that section as celery, but I don't think that's what I planted.
Basil has all gone to bloom, but the bees like it.
A few of the sweet potatoes I found by digging a little deeper. Note that I did not stage this photo, the sweet potatoes are laying where I set them down on the patio table. I then started looking around for nearby objects I could add to the picture to give an idea of size. Eventually I realized it probably wasn't necessary. it's a good thing I can laugh at myself.
Hi greeneyes and everyone!
Well, I finally got my round tuit to repot the Christmas cactus. I think its toes probably are feeling a LOT better now! While I was at it, I had two pots of parsley and brought one in. The other I placed in a larger pot. I’m experimenting to see if it will overweather this winter. Not betting on it, just want to see!
I inspected the pot in which I planted my walking onions. The sweet little idiots are sprouting! I’m guessing that they’ll do their thing and hopefully come back in the spring. I did not plant all of my starts, so if they don’t make it, I can try again in the spring. At least I know the starts I have are viable!
Gutters have been cleared of leaves, the turbine covers are on, and covers over the foundation vents are closed. I believe we are tucked in and [mostly] ready for the predicted cold weather in our region.
Looking forward to receiving my recipe book and TSquash seeds!
