Anyone who opposes the Affordable Care Act is a subhuman (Why Fry a Turkey when You can Zot Them?)

Anyone who opposes the Affordable Care Act is a subhuman. It is a great law but lying republicans are trying to destroy it. I signed up with no problem on the website. Republicans want to repeal my new insurance. Obama is a hero!

That was it!

Thanks!

I guess I could always translate for the low information voters...

Yes, I followed you two on that thread for a bit.

Was that the thread with the link to the electric universe? That Was Cool!

So, are we doomed or not?

“Congratulations user!” the missive began, “you are the proud owner of a new Nucleonics 3500 ram particle fusor!”
Subscript at the bottom mentioned something about a gift if fear.
He was too busy to read that part, there was science to perform!

Later, after the heat had radiated away enough for rescue crews to enter, a sheet of scorched paper riffled by in the wind.
At the bottom it read, “For entertainment uses only.”

Yes.
It is impossible for is on to disconnect Lovejoy’s tail.
Solar wind is the culprit, and other comets do disconnect events.
2p/encke does regular shows of such.

Lol.
No.
Not doomed yet.

Yep, that's the one. Of course, Wal Thornhill is a nutcase, and talks like a valley girl to boot. Makes him difficult to listen to, and offers no convincing input that his 'theory' would cause Ison to hit Earth (other than in the convoluted thinking of someone from Yosemite.)

So, are we doomed or not?

Well of course. Just not the way these nutbags envision it...

Assuming you wanted a bit more than that, try this mental picture. Assume you are on the ground floor in a multilevel building (allow for basements too ;-). For our convenience we will say that the floor is 'flat' (let's call this the 'plain of the elliptic'). Suppose there is a loop track (you could call the loop track 'trajectory' which is determined by mass, gravity, velocity, and other such messy things) that cuts across this flat floor at an angle of 60 degrees such that the 'descending' loop and the 'ascending' loop meet at a point some 90 feet and out of view from your location. From your vantage point this loop track will 'penetrate' the floor you are standing on twice, once coming in a direction that you would describe from your viewpoint as 'down' toward the meeting point (disappearing into the basement) and once in the apparent 'up' direction away from this meeting point (coming back out of the basement). Further suppose that you can in no way get closer to the meeting point than 90 feet.

With me so far? Flat floor, loop that comes in from some upper floor, disappears into the basement, meets its 'opposite' side, pops back up out of the basement, and disappears back to some upper floor... Now, on this track on the 'downward' slide is rolling a big marble of, say, 5 inches in diameter (drawing not to scale ;-) that rolls 'down' this track and somewhere after it disappears into the basement and out of sight it breaks into a lot of fragments of who-knows-how-big size. Now at this point we may not be able to totally equate to a 'loop track' because we now have multiple objects so we can either postulate multiple tracks or maybe a 'blunderbuss' shaped track going back 'up'. The now multiple parts of the once 5 inch diameter marble will begin to spread 'about' what would have been the original loop track.

That's what we have now with the comet chunks. But getting back to out mental model (because it is easier to think in terms of 90 feet than 9 million miles, or AU's or other measurements - and if you do have problems with 90 feet, that's about a 9 story building..) We now have these marble chunks that have passed the meeting point of the 'descending' and 'ascending' loop 9 stories away from you. They pop back up out of the basement, and are traveling at an angle that will put the center of the 'cone' of marble chunks 40 feet (4 stories) over your head when they pass a point that is vertical to you.

The only way one or more marble chunks could divert from the 'track' and start flying across the ground floor in a collision course with you would be if some external force was added to the marble at an angle radically different from its 'track'. Standard physical laws don't allow that to happen...

Now, if the aliens from Niburu or Herculobus, of maybe a cosmic godzilla were to play baseball with the marble, then anything is possible. We cannot then predict what will happen (other than if it was a cosmic godzilla all the fragments would hit Japan...) We would need to talk to Schrodinger about his cat and other interesting subjects at that point.

See, we would need to discuss cats with Schrodinger because we were not able to observe the event down in the basement. And observing the event would have ...

Oh never mind.

Oh, come on. You know the cat isn't going to go poo with you watching it.

Hmmm...

Wonder if Schrodinger ever thought about observing the litter box as a method of observing the cat while not observing the cat...

Can't seem to find any additional treatises on that aspect...

Of course back in 1935 they didn't have clumping litter...

I had a Schrödinger's Cat moment in my life a few days ago.

I had misplaced my wallet (somewhere in my bedroom), but I only knew it was gone when I went to make a purchase. Mental backtracking commenced.

At one point, I asked my daughter to check her car, as we had gone to Subway. It occurred to me that if the wallet was in her car, then it was secure, even though it was technically lost at the same time.

Kind of a dead and not-dead moment to my way of thinking.

I was greatly relieved when I found that it had simply slipped out of my pants pocket and was safe all the time.

If there were a space tornado, all the fragments would locate the nearest trailer park.

And as a corollary, if Schrödinger’s Cat had been placed in a box supplied by the NSA, would that have altered the thought experiment...

Nice

You need to send it to BPEarthwatch. Or at least his worshipers on the Ison thread... ;-)

And maybe a cc to Nibiru...

I checked. There is no FReeper named BPEarthwatch... Just the EweToob front man for the kook fringe.

The “[insert space object here] is gonna mill us” crowd has beenrather jumpy lately.
The jump from Elenin to yu55 to 2012da14 to Chelyabinsk airburst to Ison has been...interesting.
They can’t seem to be coherent in their fear du jour.
And some idiots suggested that the first four objects mentioned were one and the same.
So now that Ison is no more, I wonder what object they will latch onto next?
(Idiot on yootoob claimed Ison turned mars into a comet..yeesh)
Mankind deserves an extinction event.
Kind of a “you want to be afraid? Fine.” thing.

I found it originally on Skywatcher’s home page, promptly lost it and had a dickens of a time finding it on the interwebs in the mean while.
