Numbers Station

Some months ago, I was reading comments on a thread. I have forgotten what the topic was, but several posters were referring to radio stations which broadcast only someone reading numbers. I got the impression that this was many years ago and that they were HAM radio stations.

Could you please tell me a little about this. I was trying to tell my husband about it some time later, as he has some knowledge of radio technology, but he had never heard of such a thing.
