There are so many amazing science fiction movies that it's hard to include all the greats in a list of 50. It may not be the same 50 you'd pick, but I hope you enjoy this list of must-sees.

Saw Brazil at the theater. Asked for my money back when it was over — and the sobs refused.
Just how early into a lousy movie do you have to leave to keep from getting ripped off?
The books were far better.
Jules Verne’s books are very readable. I guess they were written in French so I maybe the credit should go to the translator.
Whatever they are really good.
No accounting for taste.
HEY!!! Firefly was a "Sci-Fi Western!" And it was the best TV series in the history of EVERYTHING!!!!

Totally agree on Event Horizon... still... it has cues (as many sci-fi horror films do) from the original Alien. I believe Alien is easily a top 3 science fiction movie... right behind An Inconvenient Truth.
Bang bang - I mean zap zap.
can’t wait for the sequel! The scene of the shark with the guy who had a chainsaw ROCKED!
Hopefully the casting director will never work again... The “parents” and the “children” were all about the same age!

It is slow paced, but there is a lot going on in that film. It is a film about ideas, where most sci fi today is about special effects. I think this is one of the most emotional scenes I have ever seen. The film takes a long time getting here, but when it does, all the emotion is earned.
Seen 38 of them. Crosschecking to see how many of the 12 I missed are on Netflix.
I’m at 44.
I thought Cloverfield was pretty good.
But then after watching many a Japanese giant monster movie as a kids I always wondered what it was like for the people in the cities that got smashed.
the original Godzilla is about the only one that ever bothered to address the subject on a human level.
And then along came Cloverfield.
This fan video captures the atmosphere very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5okyVSvYeu8
But Top 50? Probably not.
Yup, Wall-E was one of the best sci-fi stories as far as movies go in many a year, at least in my opinion.
This looks like a mix of classics and drek. Probably a shorter but more interesting thread would be a list of 50 sci-fi books.

It's amazing how people see things like this differently. I was am so thrilled that I saw "Brazil" in a big theater, with a big screen and great sound. It was the most visually stunning movie I had ever seen. I still enjoy it, but it loses so much on the small screen. And I thought it was brilliant.

I too did not care for the characters... superficial millenial types as I recall.
