Rocket launch from Wallops Island, Virginia, about an hour from now. Good visibility from much of the eastern US. Open Ustream window at link to get live feed.
I darted outside just about right when it left the pad. I’m in Northern VA. Couldn’t see a thing. Heard a ‘ka-bump’ which could’ve been anything.
I was asked to leave a building at JSC once when I happened across John Glenn and told him he was an ass for having such a big ego he bumped someone who had been training for years off their shuttle ride. I’m pretty sure he had never been spoken to that way before. What he did really pissed me off.
Didn’t he do some kind of favor for Bubba Clinton to get that ride?
Saw the flame from north central PA for about a minute. My son was impressed. Maybe even inspired!
A bit cloudy here but I saw it break through about 20 degrees over the horizon for maybe 30 seconds. . .looked like an orange-ish star with a very small tail and from this angle seemed more stationary than moving across the sky.
Yes, John Glenn was on the Senate investigative committee looking into illegal foreign donations by China to U.S. political campaigns for the 1996 election. He suppressed testimony about it. A Marine friend of mine considers him an ex-Marine for that and a traitor.
I think we might have had too much”stuff” in the way to see anything. Philly suburbs aren’t exactly “night sky viewing” friendly at the best of times :)
Now that the leaves are down I can just look out the window to see this. Really thrilling!

A really great video with the rock group RUSH’s song Countdown and some REALLY nice shuttle launch video that someone mixed with it. The song was written after Rush was invited to watch a launch, and has also been used often for the NASA wake up music.
Saw it from South Jersey. All staging was visible. In sight for a good four minutes. Not as impressive as the Minitor 5 launched in Sept. but was still a great show with a nearly full moon to boot!
