Why The Patriots Got Screwed By The Non-Call At The End Of The Monday Night Game (Tsk! Tsk!)
Yahoo Finance ^ | 11/19/13 | Tony Manfred

The New England Patriots lost to the Carolina Panthers 24-20 after a controversial ending on Monday Night Football. On the final play of the game, an official threw a flag after Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly appeared to interfere with New England tight end Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. If the pass interference penalty was called, the Patriots would have had one untimed play from the one-yard line to win the game. But the officials ended up picking up the flag, declaring the game over, and running off the field without an explanation. Tom Brady was furious after the game, chasing down the officials and cursing them out in the tunnel. There was a ton of confusion about this. ESPN's in-house refereeing consultant said it wasn't pass interference, but everyone else seemed to think it was a clear penalty.

“Interference penalties have been called away from the ball.”

They call interference away from the ball all the time. I don’t care at all about NE, or Carolina, but I am glad Brady gave an earful to these cowardly refs running off the field because collectively they all suck. The press will interview everyone, including the clubhouse attendants, but have no access to the referees. That is an absolute joke. Who do they think they are, Obama? Instead they will trot out a league shill like Jerry Austin to spew some company line BS. Why can’t the referees be interviewed? The game ticket buying, DTV Sunday Ticket buying, NFL licensed junk buying customers want to hear from them! Maybe they would do a better job if they knew they were going to be held accountable. ...and don’t give me that BS rating system they use. Jerome Boger, the affirmative action referee, reffed the Super Bowl last year. Enough said!

I was amazed it was a national game and NE was not the home team. Had they been, the penalty would have been sustained.

Wow. Looks like interference to me. But I dislike Gronkowski and LOVE the interceptor. Who would’ve thunk Robert Lester would be playing this way after going undrafted? His hard work is paying off. RTR

Except it was an obviously catchable ball, for which the ref closest to the play made the right initial call.

It was the second game the refs screwed the Pats on this year—and they’ve only lost three games.

It’s very Democrat/liberal of Freepers to root against the Pats just because they’re good.

Pushed him straight out of his route and held him. Should have been another play after that.

I agree with your reasoning and your conclusion.

I've seen quite a few bad/questionable calls (and NON-calls) by this year's referees. Makes you wonder...

"Only a fag would hate the Patriots, especially just because they’re habitual winners. You FAG."

Let's be accurate. It's your quarterback, prettyboy pinhead Tom Brady, who looks like a fag.

Your behavior, along with that of Belichick and Brady, is textbook evidence of the fact that the Patriots and many of their fans don't know how to deal with losing.

It's a tough world. Suck it up.

Should be obvious, but there really isn’t any truth anymore. The receiver plants his right foot to start his comeback to the ball and the defensive player grabs him and pushes him back, preventing him from doing so. Uncatchable? Absolutely. But only because the receiver was interfered with.

Pat’s QB said he did not step into the ball and get it there. Admits himself.

Personally, don’t really care, my favorite teams are the Pats and the Saints hate to see either lose but listened to it broken down on ESPN’s Mike and Mike this morning and everyone agreed it was an un-catchable ball - that’s the breaks, we’ll get them next time.

I don’t like those types of calls because they are subjective.

Catchable, uncatchable, that’s an opinion.

I have the same feeling about intentional grounding, being “in the pocket” or out of it, what difference does it make? If the QB throws the ball and there’s no receiver there because the QB doesn’t want to eat a dirt sandwich, it was grounding...

Go with the facts we know and see. Pass interference is pretty well defined.
Although this year, seems to me there have been alot of calls where it was just incidental contact...

The spike rule is a funny one too. I think the ball should have to be thrown out of bounds in the direction of a receiver to stop the clock. Throwing the ball into the ground or spiking the ball as is called to me is an intentional fumble.

It was a questionable non-call - the tight end was clearly held - and I've never seen the "uncatchable" rule applied quite like that, but I doubt the TE could have caught the ball under any circumstances - the defender was between him and the ball. Brady even admitted it was a bad throw, way underthrown.

The Pats lost the game on two other plays - the third-and-seven where Newton eluded four sacks, which led to a later touchdown, and the Pats fumble on the Carolina five yard line. If those two plays hadn't happened, that final play never would have happened.

By the way, as a Seahawks fan, I was rooting for the Pats. I fear Carolina in the playoffs.

"Yep! I’m tired of his whiney little bitch act."

In the postgame press conference, Brady did not complain about the call and said he made a poor throw. He said the Pats had chances to win but didn't make the plays. He didn't sound whiny at all.

This is karmic retribution for the blown call against the Raiders in the snow that burdened us with the Patriot’s dynasty in the first place.

The Seahawks will have another chance this year after almost last year.
