Comet ISON could break up into itty-bitty pieces long before it gets closer to the Sun, selfishly denying us all the opportunity to see it shine brightly in the night sky.
The comet is currently visible in the predawn sky, but it may not be there for long if astroboffins from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research and the Astronomical Institute at Ludwig Maximilian University are right.
In a post on the International Astronomical Union's Comets and Asteroids Facebook page, the scientists reported spotting "wings" coming from the comet, which may suggest that the nucleus has broken up.
"The coma wings suggest the presence of two or more sub-nuclei with individual expanding atmospheres in the overall cometary coma and may indicate nucleus splitting in the comet," they said.

Looks to me like the comet will pass fairly close to Earth. What effect will splintering have with multiple pieces entering the Sun’s gravity at different angles?
To some degree, but unless a very large separation occurred, gravity differences between the pieces would be minor, increasing with distance from the sun of course. But the velocity needed to send pieces our way would be tremendous and require some kind of really massive explosion. The current track takes the comet and any debris from a breakup well above and in front of the earth. An unknown might be some kind of massive CME occurring at an opportune time knocking debris into a different trajectory - another highly unlikely possibility and one that would more likely only push pieces further away from the earth's path.
Any encounter with any exiting debris would be extremely remote; more likely we get a fantastic light show from it.

Right now it is blow the ecliptic (the plane the Earths orbit is on). Soon, after it’s closest approach to the sun, it will cross back to being above the ecliptic.
Around the time, it will cross the Earths orbit. I mean almost exactly the Earths orbit.
Earth won’t be there - not yet, anyways.
IF the comet disintegrates, there is a very, very, very good chance that come the end of April/beginning of May 2014, you will see some of the pieces. Because that is when the Earth will pass through the debris cloud.
It could be a total dud. It could be the most spectacular meteor storm the Earth has seen since it’s early history.

Sad to say, but I sure would like to hear some confirmation from the Russians! lol
I say this based on an observation of others were the original projected tract from NASA's models wasn't "exactly" accurate. The original model of the path I personally saw on JPL's small body simulator showed ISON coming in quite a bit above earth's orbital path. Now they're showing it intersecting it.
