I gave up gluten and here's what happened

That's a tough road. I do not envy you. I gave up gluten once, long before it was trendy about ten years ago. I was going through some hypochondriac phase due to having to have some moles removed and some other crap. Anyhow, I was pretty crazy for about six months. (: I got a little fanatical in my diet and giving up gluten was one of the by products.

Gluten is in damn near everything. I think I was down to about 20 things I could eat.

I don't remember if I felt better or worse. I certainly OVER ATE less and I think overeating is the culprit of many of our problems more so than any one thing.

My husband takes flax everyday and swears by it. I use just the oil.

mine is psychological, brought on by the thought of being with a controlling woman. doesn’t show up for hours so if I talk myself out of it I’m ok. Self-cognitive therapy.

I was diagnosed when I was in college when I was 20. It’s much easier to manage now than it was over 15 years ago. Labels are much better, and thankfully most items list allergens in the food. Also, better restaurants are aware of it and can substitute around it.

I just hate that cutting out gluten has become a trendy thing to do.

That’s interesting, however in the article you linked the doctor is quoted thusly:

“I’m not addressing people with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease.”

My personal opinion is it’s just another symptom of the prideful, “it’s all about me” society we have become. Everyone’s looking within to the point of obsession; not so many look up to the Creator!

So the problems don't actually exist? Celiac and sometimes-fatal peanut allergies are actually "pride" and God will simply heal them of it?

Very interesting thought processes going on there.

Two comments; first please NOTE: I am NOT disputing that you really do HAVE celiac disease. And I agree it IS a terrible disease to have.

1) Your point that I quoted above is not exactly logical; the beauty of one *claiming* a trendy disease they only suspect they have — indeed, a feature of *all* hypochondria — is they DON’T actually “suffer” from it. They just imagine they do.

2) I know you to be a “prepper”. WTSHTF, picky eaters are going to be at a relative disadvantage to the rest of us. I suspect a descent from affluent self-centeredness into war or economic turmoil will winnow out the hypochondriacs from the true sufferers of food-related diseases in a BIG hurry. Just sayin’.

I remember the days, *years* after the diagnosis, when I found out I could eat Fritos, then Pepsi, and then Snickers!

For a long time I ate mostly raisins, canned peaches, and scrambled eggs. It was scary to take too many risks.

I simply posted those to explain to you why so many people who do not have celiac disease are choosing to give up wheat.

I have no opinion either way. It was just to show that articles like those are prevalent and people read them and decide to give up wheat.

It's not that terrible once you get free of gluten and esp nowadays when there is so much stuff out there to eat.

It was pretty terrible initially when I had to get ferritin (iron) IV weekly twice for 6 week regimens.

I removed gluten from my diet for just one week and Obamacare became the law of the land. “Settled law” that is still being rewritten as we speak (I thought we were supposed to be able to find out what was in it after it passed!).

Never again am I giving up gluttony, it sounds like some kinda communist plot!

The results, for me, were not dramatic. But still, I'm cutting back on gluten. The experiment revealed how much I rely upon the grains of a grass to fill me up: samosas, burritos, sandwiches, pizza, fried things, crackers, toast, pasta, cookies, bagels, cakes, meatballs.

Blame Clinton's grain (lobby) heavy FOOD PYRAMID.

It’s quite manageable these days. Fifteen years ago, it was harder to decipher which ingredients (like modified food starch) contained wheat.

Now companies that have a product, which was always gluten-free, jack up the prices after they label the product gluten-free.

I’m just thankful to have more options.

Ever wonder if the whole anti-grain anti-carbs Oprah-’n-Oz thing is just a joint conspiracy between Archer Daniels Midland, Al Gore and the EPA to free up farmland for biofuels?

I ate rice. I could eat rice without getting sick. The allergy clinic told me rice is the go to food for people with allergies and Celiac disease. To this day, if I have a food upset, I go back to rice until I'm okay again. During that really bad time, I ate rice cakes from a health food store. Now, all of that is at regular grocery stores.

I've had a complete blood analysis twice in the last two years and my inner parts, including my liver, are okay.

Except that autoimmune diseases, such as arthritis, Crohn’s, even psoriasis are very interactive with the gut flora and immune system. Celiac almost certainly.

For instance, one common drug used to treat some autoimmune diseases is a sulfa drug. They do not know its exact mechanism, other than it affects the gut bacteria.
