Hmmm... Great idea. when the SHTF, we'll be able to make Obama 5+5 bean soup! That being 5 beans steeped in hot water for 5 minutes, saved of course for use the next day. ;)
I believe a grain grinder (especially one that can be operated by hand if necessary) is one of the top of the list items to have in a long term survival situations. All native peoples have/had some way to grind grain, and I've read about holocaust survivors living in caves, whose main food processing item was a grinding stone.
A water filter is also at the top, especially a portable one.
I have the Berkey and the calcium hypochlorite but other than stored water,I don’t have what you do. I ordered some Seychelle water bottles for $16.50 from the LDS store. They filter 100 gallons per bottle. Replacement filters there are only $9.00. They looked like dandy prices to me. They were quick and didn’t charge taxes or shipping.
We have the Country Mill grain grinder. It comes with the wheat grinding auger but you can buy another auger for grinding beans and corn. We got that also.
We are accumulating heritage seeds at about 4 packets per month. We decided that when the SHTF we want to be able to grow the stuff we normally eat. For the most part it is very easy to grow vegggies such as carrots, onions, collards, kale, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, peas, pumpkin, squash, etc. We are staying away from the exotic stuff and sticking with mainstays that grow well in our area.
Another thing we recently discovered is food grade diamataceous earth. We had a terrible time with fleas on the dogs this summer so we found out about this stuff last month and dusted the dogs with it and sprinkled it on the carpets and outside in the dog fenced area. It worked like a charm. Bugs gone. It also is very good for putting in your garden. You spread it around on the ground not on the plants. Any bug that crawls accross it gets dusted and this stuff sucks the moisture out of the bug and it dies. Diamataceous Earth is not expensive and you can get it at Home Depot. We are stocking up on it.
This is a post I made sometime back, if you aren't against using chemical flea treatments. It will significantly lower the cost of using Advantage for flea control - works for cats too. :-)
When buying advantage one month flea/tick treatment for dogs/cats, buy the largest size available. For example, the Advantage II Blue 6-Month Flea Control for Extra Large Dogs Over 55 lbs -- 6 Tubes costs $62.54 with free 2nd prime shipping and NO sales tax. BTW, Amazon Prime is a great deal, for about $79 per year, you get 2nd day free shipping on many purchases + free streaming video = > Netflix for an entire year, also free kindle book library access. The Advantage over 55 lb pack contains 6 each 4.0 ml tubes. The dosage rates for both dogs and cats can be found online. What I do is pour a tube in a small test tube with a rubber cap. These are available at vet and farm supply stores. Then I use a 1 ml syringe (with needle) to draw the amount required (for a 12 lb dog, 0.6 ml works great) from the test/blood sample tube through the rubber top (without opening the tube) and squeeze out the liquid as recommended behind their shoulders. This does two things, if you purchase prepackaged treatment for 10 - 20 lb dog, you'll get a tube with 1.0 ml. This is too much flea control for a 12 lb dog (remember only 0.6 for 12 lb dog). By drawing only what is needed for a particular size of dog, you prevent both waste and overdosing. The package size above, contains 24 ml of treatment. This is enough for treating a small 12 lb dog for 40 months, and in the winter you can skip several months. If you buy the package for 11-20 lb dogs, you get only 6 - 1.0 ml tubes, the price is quite high at $51.66 and only contains enough treatment for 6 months. Btw, Purchasing from Amazon will save you about half the cost of either size verses buying from a vet's office. If this tip saves you money, please consider donating a few extra bucks to FreeRepublic.Com will ya??? ;)
With fitness, I’d say baby steps are better. If you try and change too much too fast, your body will fight you on it.
I’ve been exercising during my lunch breaks at work. The first week, that meant walking back and forth down the hall. Later it meant crossing the skywalk and looping around both elevators. Eventually I added some slow stair-climbing into the mix. This week I managed to run up 4 flights of stairs without stopping! I was completely winded, but I did it! Considering that not too long ago I couldn’t walk at all, this is amazing. But if I’d tried to go straight from the wheelchair to running stairs, I would have hurt myself and ended up back in the wheelchair and even worse off than I started. I had to take it slow, and pay attention so I wouldn’t do too much. And what mainly started as me just trying to deal with my deskside restlessness, has turned into real progress.
Hot tea with milk is the british way.
So is warm beer;-{)
Great tasting beer is good at any temperature.
Didn’t think I liked beer until I tried beer in Germany. Never had the opportunity to taste british beer.
Good article.
The problem with Advantage and Frontline is that the fleas have developed an immunity to the chemical. The lady at Petsmart told us to save our money that nothing except Trifexis (which we used last year and it worked) works anymore. It will slow the fleas down but not kill them. We were wondering why the Frontline was not working and we used Advantage and it did not work at all. The diatamaceous earth works fast and its non toxic. You can eat it. I highly recommend it.
OH WOW!! THAT IS FABULOUS!!! KUDOS!!!
I’ve had jugs of water stashed in the woods for years. It’s fine.
Clean ‘em. As I said before, I’ve had jugs out in the woods for years.
Love Bay leaves. Have used them for a long time. Rosemary is a recent addition. Like it too. Also really like tarragon added to a soup with tomatoes in it.
Fitness is very slow for me. When I told Doctor I wanted to get back to excercising, he told me OK, but you need to take it easy - your heart has been through a lot.
So I do take it easy. Work for about 20 minutes and rest for awhile, and then work another 20 minutes. Try to walk up the hill and back once a day when the weather is nice.
I can tell that I am better and stronger, but I am not back to baseline which wasn’t that great to begin with.
That’s pretty cute. I have a couple of similar items. I also have one that is basically 2 wire srainers about the size of a coffee scoop, with two handles.
When you squeeze the handles, the two strainers open. You put the tea leaves in, and release the handles and the strainers close and hold the tea between them. Then you stick it into your cup of hot water.
I may have to buy a couple of those from Amazon for stocking stuffers for my adult kids.
I do like herbal tea too.
That’s a shame. I started cooking when I was about 6 years old at my parents restaurant. I used to cook cheese burgers the most often.LOL
I did learn to sew in the ninth grade. Made a dress, and a skirt. Taught myself to crochet and knit using a book. Now, I don’t do any of that stuff, but I do still cook.
