Dad calls cops to teach 19-year-old son a lesson, cops kill the kid
Daily Caller ^ | 11/08/2013 | Robby Soave

After 19-year-old Tyler Comstock quarreled with his father and drove off in his truck, the elder Comstock decided to teach him a lesson by reporting the truck to the police as stolen.

Soon after, cops chased down Tyler and shot him to death — despite receiving orders from dispatch to cease their pursuit.

On Monday, an argument broke out between Tyler and his father, James Comstock, who refused to buy his son a pack of cigarettes. Tyler stormed off and left in his father’s truck, which is owned by a lawn care company.

Cops pursued Tyler to the nearby Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa. During the chase, Comstock rammed a police vehicle at least once, according to reports.

Still, a recently released audio file revealed that dispatchers twice instructed police to stop following Comstock. The officers did not obey.

The truck eventually came to a stop in the middle of campus property, at which point police ordered Comstock to turn off the engine. Instead, the 19-year-old revved it, prompting Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson to fire six shots into the truck. Two of them hit Comstock, killing him at the scene.

The guy performed at least three major felonies in under four minutes and was a major danger to others from his driving.
I got the impression from the driver that he wasn’t reasonable to stop or listen when he decided to stop and put his car into reverse to make a collision with the police car. That is IMO not typical.

Well, the truck (whose driver had just launched the trailer he had into another car through a red light) decided to jump a curb and to run through the grounds of that campus.

The driver chose all locations from what I saw and the video IMO didn’t hide anything.

This young felon was not a cooperative person and was being real violent using his vehicle as a weapon.

Look at the video a few times.

Give him a head start and see if he stops speeding through lights.

That would be totally irresponsible.

There is a big difference between having an accident and being rammed on purpose.

As a private citizen, with no obligation to even attempt an arrest, purposely ramming my vehicle, I would first attempt to flee, but if he followed I would shoot from inside my vehicle.

Using the truck as a weapon is no different than shooting at the police as far as use of force contiuem is concerned.

Generally speaking, you shoot at the cops, you get killed.

He mounted up 4 felonies or so in under four minutes, had already

*used his car as a weapon against the police

*drove recklessly through several stop signs or red lights in intersections swerving all over as a dangerous driver

*had his trailer get hit by another car perhaps also hurting or killing those folks when he ran a red intersection light

His actions warranted the end result.
The young man choose to go on instead of stopping when first being asked to pull over. Actions have consequences.
Looking at the video, the police were not guilty of anything and had a mad dog on their hands.

He escalated.

Started by driving off with reckless driving.
Then stopped long enough for the cop to come behind him so he could reverse his car to ram the police vehicle.
Then he was off again through ALL red lights, stop signs and traffic signals never slowing down or stopping.

In one of the intersections that was blown through his trailer got rammed off of his truck by an innocent driver who had the green light (possibly killing them or others).

If the guy wouldn’t stop and get out of the car and did all he did, I think deadly force was justified.

Hello, go look at the video and you will see the danger, the felonies and how he even caused his trailer to get hit and cause injury as he blew a red light never slowing down.

The guy was a major threat.

See video.

It is the cops job to go home safely every night.

And to see to it that some drug addled crackpot or drunk doesn't crash into innocent people.

In the video I saw near the beginning the cop car comes up behind and the guy rams the car after backing the trailer into the officers car.
Officer reports I was just rammed/hit.

What could they do different?

Multiple felonies in four minutes.
Already ran red lights and had his trailer smashed off by a car he got in the way of.

Nobody want to go yahoo, I killed some stupid, horrible, A-hole child or adult, but sometimes that is the way it turns out. In this case the 19 year old made his choices and they were all the worst ones. They were bad dangerous to all criminal ones.

Whether people like it or not, lawyers drive the show on use of force.

When you see a person tased for mildly resisting arrest, it is because somebody balanced the average costs of injuries and settlements from going hands on, with using a taser.

The same thing goes with disabling fire. Can you imagine the police slinging rounds all over the place with this guy on the run?

The kid had committed multiple major felonies in under four minutes.
He was driving like a maniac and was a danger to all.

I don’t know that not chasing someone who is a maniac behind the wheel helps at all. Could in fact give enough time for them to instead kill a bunch of other people.

CodeToad’s idea.

Pursuits by law enforcement on the road are even more dangerous than commonly thought. More people in the United States are killed by high speed pursuits than they are by police firearms, and yet, these wrongful deaths from car accidents will likely continue year after year. That is why we must convince police departments to modify their pursuit policies to only chase offenders when the following occurs:
•It is safe to follow and pursue a suspect.
•Only chase a fleeing driver when forcible felonies are involved.

In a minor case, such as a shoplifting incident, it makes little or no sense for the police to pursue such a suspect at high speeds in a metropolitan area where it is likely to hurt innocent bystanders. When the police chase a suspect for a non-violent act or a minor offense and someone is killed, then, we as a society must ask ourselves if the good outweighs the bad.

Just about anything they could have done differently would have endangered the general public. I believe the 19 year old intended and succeeded in committing suicide by cop.

Never, I think the weapons stay holstered until they had a clear shot always if they can help it.

This kid was out of his mind and obviously never learned respect for others.
If he had that little bit of respect training he probably would not have taken his dad’s truck and would have stopped with a siren.

only chase offenders when the following occurs: •It is safe to follow and pursue a suspect.

Where would that be? The Bonneville Salt Flats or a closed course? Why would an innocent person not yield to an emergency vehicle with lights flashing and siren sounding?
