South Africans are being asked to quit drinking for the month of October as part of a campaign to raise awareness about alcohol abuse.
The idea behind the OcSober campaign is simple - stay sober in October.
Instead of drinking away their cash, participants are encouraged to donate it to a charity of your choice.
Organisers hope that the initiative will help to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities on roads.
Charity organisations have given the campaign the thumbs up.
Its new for us, but I think if you talk about a campaign like this and you can really market it properly, I can really say that it can have a positive impact to spread the message of responsible alcohol use, David Fourie of SANCA said.
Organisers say embracing that by embracing the OcSober concept, participants can ensure they will not themselves become statistics of alcohol-related incidents.
Q: Can you go a month without alcohol?
A: Why would I? I hate to answer a question with a question, but sometimes it is the only response.
I’ll go without when I’m dead. Why would I deny myself a nice scotch or a beer or two with a pizza?
A year in August here.
Good luck, you've got only 10 months to go!
True, but you can’t become a drunk if you don’t drink alcohol.
+1.
lol.....Me too1
No, you misunderstand, working on my second year.
Quit smoking 33 days ago. Must say, quitting smoking is harder.
Sober 19 years, 8 months and 3 days. But who is counting?
Before I got sober, a psychologist said I should stop drinking for a year.
He said there was no harm from not drinking.
He said if I could not stop, then I should stop entirely.
His specialty was moderation management, not total abstinence.
Of course I wasn’t ready yet. Only later when I did stop, did I understand the phenomenon of addiction, etc.
Congrats for your year. Keep coming back.
Yep!!
Booze can cause high BP....no doubt about it.

Interestingly, I’ve go through phases where I kinda get tired of the flavor of alcohol. And then a few months later a nice scotch with a cigar sounds really nice.
I could, but why would I want to?
Much as I'm ashamed to admit it, I'm self-medicating with lots of wine and beer. I can't bear to think about what's going on, read the news, watch our economy and people's hopes implode.
It's a crutch, I know. But it's my method of coping for now.
As the years go by, does it make it any easier to stay away from alcohol and remain sober? Or does that urge to drink never ever go away? I do not drink but have a cousin who is an alcoholic and he hasn’t been able to remain sober at all. I’m just curious.
I’ll join you!
4 months sober. I didn’t have a problem drinking its that I no longer have the desire to have a drink.
Indeed. A serving a day is a pleasure.
And I say that following 35 years of nada.
Actually, brother, I found that now is the BEST time to be sober. You need your wits about you.
