OcSober Challenge: Can You Go a Month Without Alcohol?
ENCA ^ | Sunday 6 October 2013

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:15:12 AM PDT by nickcarraway

South Africans are being asked to quit drinking for the month of October as part of a campaign to raise awareness about alcohol abuse.

The idea behind the OcSober campaign is simple - stay sober in October.

Instead of drinking away their cash, participants are encouraged to donate it to a charity of your choice.

Organisers hope that the initiative will help to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities on roads.

Charity organisations have given the campaign the thumbs up.

“It’s new for us, but I think if you talk about a campaign like this and you can really market it properly, I can really say that it can have a positive impact to spread the message of responsible alcohol use,” David Fourie of SANCA said.

Organisers say embracing that by embracing the OcSober concept, participants can ensure they will not themselves become statistics of alcohol-related incidents.

If you can’t give up drinking for a month, you really need to give up drinking. That said, I find all these suggestions to donate to charity somewhat offensive and/or intrusive, unless they’re coming from my spiritual advisor. You give up drinking for a month, you go ahead and spend your beer money on whatever you damn well please.

Not a problem. I inherited a pre-disposition to migraine headaches and, for me at least, alcohol is one of the triggers. Told my doctor about it, and he gave me a prescription for some pills. The bottle says “Do not use alcohol while taking this medication”.

I started drinking fairly heavily after living in Kentucky for a while. I have lots of fancy crystal decanters and, for a myriad of other reasons found myself having at least one drink every night and often having three or four.

I also noticed after a year that my once normal blood pressure had gone to a fairly stable 160 over 100. I even went on medication for it. Then one day I read an article about the connection between alcohol and blood pressure. I stopped drinking for a couple of weeks but didn’t notice an improvement. However, I figured it might take a while to matter so I went a couple more months. Then one day I thought, “Hey, it’s been a long time, I wonder if it’s working.” I took my blood pressure and it was absolutely normal. My wife and I thought the machine was haywire so we took it several times as well as took hers. It didn’t vary.

I’m gonna start drinking heavily to get my blood pressure back up, though. I understand you can get pretty good disability for it. ;-)

“I need booze to forget I’m momentarily living in a nightmarish commie regime”

I hear ya. Red wine is our coping mechanism for living in a police state.

18 hours for me!

I don’t drink a lot (2 per day), but I do drink every day, circumstances permitting. I look forward to 5 oclock and spend an hour sipping Elisha Craig 12 yo bourbon on crushed ice.

And I intend to continue doing so as long as I am able.

2 weeks before my father died, he and I split a bottle of his favorite beer....with his doctor’s approval & all of us knowing time was short. He enjoyed it and it meant a lot to both of us to share it at that time.

Hey, I don’t drink any more since I moved to KY. Uh, nor do I drink any less /grin

I know the reason I feel better is not the bourbon, it’s leaving Florida!
