While I have not been in America for almost ten years, I do watch American TV via my G-sat. My most popular channel is the History Channel. What shocks and amazes me is that most all of the women on all of the programs are slathered with Tattoos. Is this a new phenomena in America? Have women degraded themselves to such an extent? Some may think it cool. I think it is disgusting.
It is one of the things in life that I think has not been good.
The lack of...ceremony. Not in the sense of celebrating, but in the sense of people adhering to an unwritten social standard.
Examples are what you see people wearing to parties, work, church and restaurants.
There was a time when you wore a decent suit to a party. Now you wear whatever you please.
If you went to work, you were generally expected to dress a certain way. Nobody had to tell you. Now, most places have “dress codes”, and people are constantly bucking the dress code, even the reasonable guidelines.
You wore good clothes to church.
You had to wear decent clothes to a nice restaurant. Now, there is hardly a restaurant you couldn’t get into with a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops.
Look at old photos of any large sporting event up until the mid 20th century. The men are all wearing suits.
I recently saw a picture in an old Life magazine showing a typical downtown scene in a small town, sometime in the late forties. The sidewalks were jammed with people, nearly every guy was wearing a suit, women were wearing dresses, and kids wore good clothes. It was a social scene.
When I saw that picture, it could have been on Mars with today’s standards. I think we lost something when we got away from that.
The only tatoo I would consider is the fake six pack ab tattoo.

A friend developed a rating system for female tattoos.
1) The cutesy teen ankle tattoo. It says, “I am a bit addle brained because of hormones, and may be more prone to unplanned pregnancy by any male who pays attention to me.”
2) The “fart wings” or “tramp stamp” in the small of the back, which says “I have discovered sex and want a lot of it, but only with cute boys, that other girls want, who buy me stuff.” These girls belong to the FSGA, or “Future Slave-Girls of America”.
3) Large torso and arm tattoos. “I will be working most of my life as a retail cashier, waitress, or other drone work, and just want to get married to a guy who is employed and not a hitter.”
I view tattooing in much the same way I view smoking. If others want to do it, that is their business, but...I just don’t see what the heck you get out of it.
I have never understood smoking. I tried it as a kid, and wondered why people got so excited about it. It cost you money, and it didn’t even give you a buzz that I could detect.
Now, with a pack of cigarettes at 8-10 dollars a pack, I REALLY wonder.
Proof that little girls can be made to do anything as long as it is a “club” they get to belong to. Their desire to belong outweighs their sensibilities. If a parent asks, “If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?”, the answer is, yes, they would.
Robin Williams observed on the trend toward lady's lower back tattoos (aka tramp stamps): "Ladies, you might think today that looks like the sun rising out of your a$$ crack, but 30 years from now it's going to look like an octopus chasing a starfish."

Come to NYC if you want to see slathered. And I do mean slathered! Almost always young people.
Compared to the Victorian era, men in the 1940’s were slobs, too. The idea that clothes are a status symbol is something I am glad has diminished.
I was trying to put my finger on it, why that seems something important and was lost, and realized it wasn’t just to display a flashy suit in many cases.
It was to show respect for the people and the situation you were going to be involved in.
We always call it the Hitler channel.
A way to discourage kids from wanting tatoos is to show them pictures of fashion 20-40 years ago. Ask them if they’d want to look like that now and when they say no, explain that anyone from back then can now wear their hair and clothes differently but if they got a tatoo, they’re stuck with it.
I don’t know how bad the history channel is but the food network has such people on theirs also. In fact I can’t watch it because it is so disgusting.
The person that develops semi permanent tattoo ink, that fades away after 5 years, will be a millionaire.
Simply put, tattooing is an excellent expression of “idle mind is Devil’s workshop”. Too many people have too much money to waste on things like a big gaudy expensive tattoo. Why? Because “We” give them a safety net or even free living.

Yep, it is disgusting. I’ve often remarked that I must be older than dirt, but I can’t stand to look at those things, esp. on women. Will never understand the appeal.
My rule of thumb is the further south you go, the larger the female “sleeve” tats...with the exception of Seattle, which is pretty much Ink City.
My opinion may not be popular here, and it may be my age (56), but when I see a tatoo on a woman, my first impression is that she is sleazy, and has lack of class.
