If the site is hosted internally, then what costs are there to leave the site up with no changes? If it's externally hosted then hosting fees are paid for in advance

Just screwing the people out of a service that has been paid for
It’s to make the Republicans look bad. Lots of website are down. It’s a PR move by the Dems.
Not the only site. They are taking things down left and right. Probably will use it to hide things too.
Oh the drama, oh the theater......
Due to the Federal government shutdown, usgs.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable.
Only web sites necessary to protect lives and property will be maintained.
Ecosystems
Disease Maps
National Wildlife Health Center
Natural Hazards
USGS coastal erosion hazards information
USGS earthquake information
USGS emergency operations portal
USGS information on geomagnetic activity
USGS landslide information
USGS volcano information
Water
Please see doi.gov for more shutdown information.
Maybe they don’t want millions of people grinding their asses over the WW2 vet fiasco.’Cause if they had a place to leave a comment,I’d rip them a new one.
Census site is down too.
I understand the motive, the question is on what justification do they cancel funded services? I am raising another abuse of power issue
For the same reason some NOAA/NWS sites have “shutdown” front pages. Obviously the server is up. And the satellites are still orbiting. The shutdown page is to block viewing of images. They were lazy, if you have a deep url the info is still there. They’re just being pricks.
Supposedly the people that oversee the site aren’t there to do so.
Office the Clerk of the House of Representatives is 404.

Too bad, it’s the only place to read what’s going on there.
Nice.
Obamacare web sites are “essential”?
Another interesting point is the Old Faithful webcam in Yellowstone. The camera is supposedly offline with a message on the site yellowstone.net blaming it on the shutdown. One problem is that on the usual site there was a notice saying the webcam was sponsored and paid for by a grant from Canon.
The old site is probably available on the wayback machine.
The Soo Locks website is up. Its USACE.
I get a security warning but I think its because they’re looking back at me.

Computer sites do require staff to keep them running. Disk drives fail, among other things. There can be valid reasons for turning the service off given the shutdown’s duration is unknown.
NPS web sites do have useful info but long ago the sites were homogenized and the best content was lost. Search engines can find great info about any park on sites focused on the nearby gateway towns and area. But nps.gov was good for an overview. And so far as parks being closed, many of the big ones have multiple ways in, they cannot all be covered.
If the Barrycades are near you, organize a group civil disobedience action and remove them.
Thank G-d! How awful if any lives were lost this month from the daily volcano explosions in the U.S.
