MLB Announces How 3-Way AL Wild-Card Tiebreaker ... Settled (Wildcard Live Thread)
bleacherreport.com ^ | September 27, 2013 | Matt Fitzgerald

... there has been discussion as to how a three-way tie would be determined for the last clubs in: ...

Cleveland would host Tampa Bay to determine one of the wild cards on Monday; the loser of that game would then play at Texas on Tuesday to determine the second wild card.

The two winners would be re-seeded for the wild card game on Wednesday based on season series. Therefore, the Rangers would host the Rays after going 4-3 against them this season, and would be at Cleveland after going 1-5 against them (and Cleveland would be at Tampa Bay).

If two teams tie for the second wild card, home-field would be determined by the season series and (game) played on Monday. Texas would host Tampa Bay, and be at Cleveland should that scenario unfold. (Cleveland would be at Tampa Bay.) The winner would then travel to the No. 1 wild card destination for a game Wednesday.

You expected them to manhandle the Astros at the beginning of the season, but the Angels..?

Isn’t Cruz eligible to play against Tampa Bay tomorrow? Would you start him after a 50-game ‘layoff’?

I’d have him ready to DH.

If he plays; I think that is where we will see him. Rays are pitching Price.

According to ESPN’s article on the no-no, it was the first walk-off to win a no-no since 1952:

“Of the 282 no-hitters in history, it was the only one to end on a wild pitch, STATS said. And it was the first walk-off complete-game no-hitter since Virgil Trucks of the Tigers threw one on May 15, 1952, against Washington.”

my argument against Jimenez ... I would have liked to see Francona piece it together without Jimenez. Or use him 2 innings in relief. But, regardless, will it be McAllister on WED? Perhaps the difference between McAllister and Jimenez is trivial. What do people say about that?

regarding DARVISH: as soon as TB went out to a 6-0 lead at 115pm, Texas had to treat their game like an elimination game. Which it was. So Darvish had to go today.

for WED we would have:
Cobb
Garza or Ogando
McAllister ?

I doubt that either Darvish or Jimenez will be available in the bullpen on WED. Elimination games are the best if the manager is thinking. Stottlemeyer was a master in elimination games with Torre’s NYY teams.

Thanks for the info Goldwater.

It was a flukey piece of baseball history that we probably won’t see again.

I am projecting the AL Wildcard scheduled probables.

———————TAMPA————CLEVE————TEXAS

WED 25 ==== PRICE -—— —— SALAZAR ——— PEREZ
THU 26 ==== COBB -—— —— McAllister -—— GARZA
FRI 27 ==== HELLKSON -—— KLUBER -—— OGANDO
SAT 28 ==== ARCHER -—— — KASMIR -—— HOLLAND
SUN 29 ==== MOORE -—— — JIMENEZ -—— DARVISH

MON 30 TIE2 PRICE -——- —— off ———-— PEREZ
TUE 01 OFF= -— off —————— off -————— off
WED 02 WILD COBB -———— McAllister -—— OGANDO or Garza
THU 03 OFF= -— off —————— off -————— off
FRI 04 ALDS ARCHER/MOORE - JIMENEZ -— DARVISH ?
SAT 05 ALDS PRICE -—— —— SALAZAR ? ———HOLLAND ?

All of this assumes no rain-outs. Does not attempt to figure short-rest starts.

Looks good to me.

Impy, have you picked a team to root for or are you just gonna sit back and watch with no stress?

we await impy’s input on McAllister ... figure the heartland crew is more familiar than the rest of the rooting nation.

IS he enuf of a near-ace that CLE is in good shape on WED? Even against Cobb?

with Price going, the betting line is +119 ... TB is the road favorite.

TB has 54% chance of winning.

Salazar is the starter for CLEVE on WED .... !!!!
is that a surprise? I post link in a minute.

Not really, I’ll root against the Tigers and against Dusty’s Reds. Beyond that, I don’t really care.

Couple ex-W sox on the Rangers, AJP and Rios. I liked AJ. I’d kinda like Ron Washington to be fired though, better chance at that if they lose (but Nolan Ryan says he’s keeping him).

My fav uncle that moved to Atlanta 20+ years ago likes the Braves, so I wouldn’t mind seeing them win. Wouldn’t mind seeing the Indians or Pirates break their long droughts. But I wouldn’t mind making fun of them if they fail. Ain’t got no love for Boston. Want the A’s to beat the Tigers but I don’t care for Billy Beane and think it’s hilarious that they made a movie about him when his team hasn’t even been to the WS, I’d like that to continue I guess (after they beat Detroit). The Cards are a good organization it’s hard for me to dislike, they’ve sure won more than their share of championships though.

I can’t tell you anything about McAllister Pete, you probably know more than me. He was pulled from his last start in the 5th because Francona thought he was looking stiff out there (and he was stiff though he denies it was a problem). I wouldn’t trust him in the playoffs at all.

I’ve always thought it would be really cool to have a perfecto end in a walkoff HR.

I’ve always thought it would be the ultimate to have a perfect game end with a walkoff homer by the pitcher.

1-0 - you were your own offense.

Realistically, this could only happen these days in an NL park though. Would have been more awesome if that had happened yesterday.
