(CNN) -- No sooner had the tiara been placed atop her head than a barrage of racist tweets flooded the Internet.
"If you're #Miss America you should have to be American," said one.
"WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!" screamed another.
Nina Davuluri is American. She just happens to be of Indian descent. In fact, she's the first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America.
But the tweets that followed the 2014 pageant in Atlantic City on Sunday night didn't focus on how it's the second consecutive year that a Miss New York has taken the crown, or about the judge's questions (including ones about Miley Cyrus and Syria).
They were about Davuluri's heritage.
"Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote," vented one person.
Not that it bears pointing out, but Davuluri's not a Muslim -- and the president didn't have a vote.

Nothing ignorance like comments like yours. Geez people you are embarrassments to conservatives everywhere.
Ive known several Americans of Indian descent over the years and none of them ran a 7-11, none were Muslims, two were Catholic in fact and none of them were dirty or smelled bad; one was a doctor, one was an architect, one was an electrical engineer, one was a software engineer and I currently work with a gal who was born in India but she is quite Americanized in dress and in attitude, very bright, very hard working. She has an engineering degree which she received while still living in India before she got married and she and her husband, who is in finance, moved to the states but shes now in employer benefits administration.
India is NOT a Muslim country.
In fact, that is why part of Pakistan and Bangladesh broke off from India, as they are mostly Muslim.
The Indians understand the threat of Islam far more than most Americans.
They tend to be ambitious, educated people, exactly what we need here.
Most appalling was the attacks on Sikhs by ignorant Americans after 9-11 simply as they wear turbans, when their turbans and their beliefs are very different from those of any Muslim.
Sikhs are armed at all times because of Muslims, and generally have a great hatred of Muslims.
I'm beginning to wonder about the ignorance of many "conservatives" I see posting here, and wonder if they are perhaps liberal "plants" to make us look bad. I have a hard time believing conservatives can be dumb enough to post many of the things I've been seeing on FR lately.
This “Miss America” stuff is just more political correctness, dressed up in hype, skin, squealing announcers, music and politically appropriate little memorized speeches.
Look at the photos linked in post 11. Maybe that’s a remarkably bad photo of the woman, but if not, she’s just not that attractive. In contrast...
I’ve noticed over the years that a larger percentage of pageant contestants aren’t all that attractive, maybe the emphasis on talent is having an effect.
Post-racial means we can rate beauty pageant contestants without adjusting for ethnic background.
Yeah, I know.
I can’t understand why most of them act so surprised and make the ugliest faces! She held her hands over her mouth most of the time. When her hands weren’t there, you could see her tonsils with the wide open mouth. Then there are the fake tears. The cameras are rolling ladies!
When you’re in the final five, then four, three, and now you’re one of two, why can’t you be poised and smile?
I thought it was "Beauty is still in the eye of the beer holder".
HA!!!
So what was the deal with Miss Florida? Looked like she was wearing the Bruce Wayne/Christian Bale bionic leg brace from Dark Knight Rises ...
Before you start talking about ignorance FIRST learn grammar and sentence structure.
Second, visit the country or work around them and get back to us with your superior opinions.
This is all over Facebook now.....the response I favor is “isn’t it great we live in a country where an Indian-American woman can take part in a beauty pageant without the fear of being stoned to death by a government?”
Who is “them” I pray ask? Anyone whose parents/ancestors may have been from India or thereabouts? Or is it anyone with brown skin and a name that you have difficulty pronouncing? I have visited 30+ countries around the world and have worked for a couple of months in India. I find your stereotyping awful and unworthy of this forum.
Need more pix.
I traveled world wide for over 26 years so you have nothing on me. I averaged 120+ flights per year.
Numerous areas in the country of India can best be described as a cesspool on a 90 degree day. Care to take a swim in the Ganges? Or how about taking a vacation in Calcutta (Kolkata)?
I don’t know if it is their diet, the oils they like to use or whatever, but my experience with “them” has been odoriferous.
An office building I used to work in had a cleaning staff with “those” people and from the 3rd floor you knew when they entered the building.
Just because you do not like the 100% truthful message don’t play the stereotyping card as there ARE reasons stereotyping exists. Or are you implying my olfactory senses are stereotyping?
Nice Alinsky try on the brown skin card. FAIL! Talk about being unworthy of this forum.
Have Hate, Will Travel.
But not with me...I think I’d prefer passage in Odiferous Class. Sometimes a downgrade is an up.
