Breaking Bad Is TV’s Best Medical Drama, Ever
Slate ^ | Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 | Haider Javed Warraich

Breaking Bad is about a lot of things—the contextualization of evil, the blind bond of family, the consequences of lifelong repression—and of course, the macro and micro-economics of the methamphetamine industry. But wrapped within all of this is a medical drama unlike any other, possibly the best medical drama on TV, ever.

According to the article, Walt would never have turned into Heisenberg if only we had a health care system like Canada's. Of course he wouldn't have gotten any treatment, either, but it is racist to think through it that far.

Yup. Seems to be a popular opinion on the left. I've seen this image floating around for a while:

Utter nonsense, of course (next week? ha!). But, it's out there.

They missed the point. Walt didn’t start cooking to pay for his treatment, though he did use the money for that too. The goal was to give his family, which was soon going to include an unemployed single mother and a change of life baby, a nest egg after he died.

Not so....IMO.
The Sopranos was heavy on the sex, gooombas and infidelity....not very sympathetic.
BB is initially about setting up the family in case of death, unintentionally making meth that is really good stuff and brings top dollar, out smarting the “bad guys” and getting too greedy. And that’s just Walt....
While pretty violent, it’s a great study in human development and strategy.
The characters are great and well-created.
And I like and watch OC Housewives, Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, for what it’s worth.

In the meantime Walt will have to cook for the thugs and may, in the end, blow up the works and himself. What happens to Jesse?

If you like Game of Thrones get Pillars of the Earth on DVD or from your local library. G of T took some sensibility from Pillars

Also The Viking on History channel is well done. It is a drama

Goombah anf Italian mobs is way overdone by now. DeNiro has a stupid m coming out next week about him in the witness protection program. So he will earn 10 million from a crap movie that only (maybe) intrigues overseas audiences

The criminality on Breaking Bad is better and more current

I like your analysis matginzac.

I can't decide if it is a 'Midas Touch' tragedy or a 'what happens when you make a deal with the Devil' story.

Come to think of it, maybe it's both. We'll know by the end of this season if Walt is able to outsmart the devil, Lord knows he's had a helluva lot of practice.

But you realize, the only one in your line up that doesn’t show raw sex is Breaking Bad.....hmmmmm?

Too true....
What I like is the unfolding of Walt’s story....
Got screwed out of a million dollar invention by a college colleague, is a lowly science teacher in high school teaching kids like Pinkman, older kid has disabilities, wife is preggo, he gets cancer, has no resources so risks all to cook meth, it becomes the caviar of meth.....and he starts to LIKE it all
Love the concept and the character development and story line.
Some decent TV for once, to my mind!

Amen....I listen to the local talk radio station for Rush’s show and ads for this movie (Scorcese, really?) are constant.
The “bad guys” in BB are superb (Gus, the chicken guy!) and that Walt handles them in such creative ways is just genius...and great writing of a show.

Have so seen these shows...
Family has read Pillars so I watched and liked it (hated the book and abandoned it early).
Really liked Vikings and look forward to next season.
Really happy with the stuff on cable channels these days...
Real creative, gritty and smart...
Have you watched The Killing too? It’s great...just aired the second season but not sure if there’ll be a third....originally from a Danish series that took Europe by storm....highly recommend it.

Wait:

A key element —no, maybe THE key element— in Walt’s story is his REFUSAL TO ASK FOR HELP.

He is LITERALLY DYING to not ask for help.

And yet it’s a “progressive” TV series...?!

That’s ridiculous.

Note also they way with GALE: at first he’s presented as a sympathetic character, so there are a couple mentions of him as a LIBERTARIAN.

Later, when it’s clear he has to go, what do we see? Tight shots of his bookshelf, with tomes by KARL MARX. In fact, the makers really smooosh that in your face, too, giving you several different shots of that.

Later, Gale is shot in the face, and to smooth things over a bit viewers are reassured that the man dedicated his notebook to the GAY poet Walt Whitman..!

The program is CLEARLY Conservative.

dittos!! However degenerate Walt is and the meth business is, he wants self reliance and leaving money to his family. A Gov’t assistance program has never been mentioned while this show has been on

Zactly. How many times do we hear Walt declare, "I *EARNED* THIS MONEY..!" He struggles with it at first, but then sees the pride in it.

Numerous times the counter-culture Jessie whines for Walt to accept a "good enough" product (chilli pepper). But HOW MANY times times doe we hear Walt admonish that they do their absolute best, insisting they bring CalTech chem to the CAMPER...?

There are LOTS of little hints, but makers trod very lightly.

Soap opera for idiots. It is made up television, get over it. Nothing real-life about it. Seek help.

Have you ever considered that if you’re the only one in the room with issues, then, just perhaps, you’re the one in need of help? Just out of curiousity, what do you do for amusement?
