Dies, pictured above, was solidly anti-communist and also opposed the socialism of Franklin Diablo Roosevelt. Through a Democrat, Martin Dies also fought against labor unions.
There was a time in America when not all Democrats were necessarily bad and not all Republicans were good. I think back to leftist members of the GOP such as Bob LaFollete, Jacob Javits and the notorious Earl Warren. The latter was the subject of roadside signs during the time I came of age.
Re Dems:
Yes, I have no doubt some of them were just Dems and not outright socialist/communist scum. I remember Frank Rizzo in Philly, as a Democrat. He was a decent guy.
The internecine convulsions in the D party during the 60s seems, to my mind, to be the time when they were losing their soul to the radical left.
But it goes back to Wilson and his Progressives too...and FDR with Henry Wallace, openly socialist....
This has been a long time in the building.
