Whether it's their problems with "taxation without representation" or the flood of foreign diplomats weaving around town, drivers in the nation's capital are the most likely to get into a car accident, according to a new report from Allstate.
The insurance company's annual study on safe drivers, now in its ninth year, looked at property-damage claims in 194 cities from January 2010 through December 2011 and compared them to the national average. In Washington, D.C., drivers were 109 percent more likely to get into a crash, while the D.C. suburbs of Alexandria and Arlington, Va. along with Baltimore, Providence, R.I., Philadelphia and Miami were ranked among the top 10 cities for the most accidents. Interestingly, Boston wasn't on this list, but that's only because Allstate didn't collect sufficient data from Massachusetts.

Just driving to work you are taking your life in your hands. At least 20 times so far this year I have seen stupid and dangerous driving. People run stop signs, change lanes without signaling or looking and ignore traffic signs. If you get a little snow or ice on the road a bad situation becomes a disaster. Drivers in the D.C. area are incapable of operating a motor vehicle in snow or inclement weather.
Of course, they are all brain dead.
Too many women with cars.
Ever been embedded within gridlock in DC when a political motorcade is behind you and getting by, and then getting ahead?
I was AMAZED when it happened to me last... it’s stop-n-go, and a motorcade, with cops on cycles, cops in cars, sirens a wailing away, and then maybe two limo’s with a US flag on them WHIZ by, in the oncoming traffics bare left lane, weaving in and out of whatever they come across... Real chutzpah and entitlement (to the roads) mentality.
Why don’t they claim what that Kennedy guy made a few years ago blaming Ambien for the car crash he was involved in?
Government Car Insurance is needed now!
But if you like your current insurance, you can keep it......
That’s because they refuse to slow down, EVER — not in sleet, pouring rain, blizzard conditions or otherwise ...
And they run red lights. It’s so bad they have instituted a program with cameras to catch red light runners and fine them.
I-95 is like a racetrack on Friday nights.
20 times this year? How about 20 this week. I know why MD drivers are so bad. New drivers get their permit, learn to drive, amass 50 hours THEN take driver ed.
Just stupid.
Had a close call on the Beltway this summer and could easily have been called out as an idiot driver. But I did manage to change 3 lanes and exit within 500 feet starting at 40 mph and accelerating to 60, barely missing a cop who had a gaggle of miscreants quarantined to my left as I hit the ramp onto 95 south. I hate that exit. [heart in throat]
As someone who lives just oustide DC, the problem is that no-one who drives in DC is FROM DC. There’s a constant churcn of newcomes, bringing with them the customs of the states they’re from. Some see a snowflake, and drive 15 MPH; others see the open highways caused by the ridiculous easily pronounced federal snow days as a license to drive 80 MPH. Some always take the right of way; some always give it. And clever traffic flow techniques (reversing lane directions; metered entry flow, etc.) push traffic volumes far above natural levels.
I commuted on the beltway until 1992, and saw the most freaky driving until I moved to New Mexico. Not the same sort of bad, but really amazing stuff. First, having driven in Anacostia (DC war zone) I thought I’d seen the worst of bad weather driving... until NM, when there’s snow on the ground, the gas pedal is a full-on or full-off switch... nothing in between. And then there is the “roll over” were the car ends up on it’s roof (I saw a guy do this turning into his driveway).
It’s always seemed to me that amongst the professional work force in D.C. proper that the majority are White Women. Figure the majority of Black population living or working in D.C. take the Metro or the Bus.... I bet it’s White women driving into their Asst. Museum Director at the Smithsonian job from Fairfax or such that are crashing their cars because they have not been trained in aggressive city driving techniques.
White Girl Crash a Lot.

The answer is in the demographics of DC.
Demographics is destiny.....
Understand about DC and NM!
Taxi from airport in DC to hotel in Crystal City scared the crap out of me, with all of the lane changes, etc.
Went skiing at Red River NM with another couple, where we stayed in a rented cabin above the town. Went to Taos to ski one day and by the time we’d gotten back to RR it had gotten dark and the roads had frozen over.
Had to go uphill from town to get to cabin, but 2WD Jimmy couldn’t get traction and slid into a big tree at a curve. Local guy who owned the cabin next door came downhill 5 minutes later. Told young son to walk back home (about a half mile) and tell the wife he was taking us to hospital.
He had been on the way to buy some beer, so did a quick stop for a 12-pack in RR. THEN we headed for Taos! This guy was driving a big Olds or Buick sedan on icy roads from RR to Taos at around 60-75 mph! Scary as hell, but that car was huggin’ the road, even on ice.
Nice gent, as he stayed at the hospital with us for an hour or so and drove us back to cabin, after buying another 12-pack. The return trip on ice was more leisurly, at only about 50 mph, so the beer must have mellowed him out a little.
