The poor hostess told a very different story. Winfrey was browsing through some purses, and when she inquired about one particular model, the hostess suggested another, almost identical model, saying that while the other one would cost around 35k euros, the alternative one would cost much less and it's practically the same object, same model and material. Standard polite and helpful salesman behavior.

LOL
Maybe they've been goaded into it by being called racists all their lives.
That may be just the point of all the pot stirring.
The canned answer from the Swiss should
have been: “Who are you? Oh, you are not Swiss.”
As a Walmart cashier, I've done it a lot when customers bring an item from electronics that we have at the register cheaper.
Could it be that many are just plain sick and tired of everything being about race? The constant whining is being shoved down our throats. For Oprah to even make this a public debacle is disgraceful, there were far more white women that made her rich than black women, yet she wants to jump into the grievance industry because of a 38,000.00 purse, laughable. I sold real estate for many years and I erroneously qualified a lot of people by theirs looks, car type and style, but it was NEVER their color. As a matter-of- fact, I always loved working with a black family as they could get mortgage loans white people could never dream of being approved..
Sorry- I first saw the price in pounds sterling and must have converted it to dollars inaccurately. Whether or not she is an animal activist, Winfrey is big on complaining about the poor-and spending that much for a purse while doing so( not to mention globetrotting) is hypocritical in my book.
If they knew she was the famous Oprah, then they knew she could afford the bag-and they were racist. So she should pull up her big girl panties and move on. You’re always going to meet someone who doesn’t like you for whatever reason, color is just one of them.
Yes, I have been in stores where sales people have steered me towards cheaper items, items that were very like the expensive ones. In fact I have had sales people tell me something would be on sale in a few days and if I could stand to wait that long it would be x amount of dollars cheaper. In the states most retail sales clerks don't get a commission so it is no skin off their nose which one they sell you.
The shopkeeper was interviewed by the DailyMail and offered an apology; but she said the saleswoman is Italian and may not have the best command of English.
I'm fairly certain the salesperson had little to no idea of who Oprah is or what she's worth. Do you know who is a star in Italy or Switzerland? People on this forum seem to dismiss all that Oprah has accomplished as a woman in a tough business and in charitable giving because they don't like her politics. Unflattering to our side to be so (pardon) black and white about the person.
Nossir. The 900 lb gorilla comment is meant to be descriptive of the political action of Amnesty.
Please read closer.
Thanks, Albion and hello! I just couldn’t figure out what Oprah was angry about. And then I read two different versions of the story online. One was that she was steered toward a less expensive bag and the other sounded like the clerk refused to show her the bag at all. Anyway, what a weird story and why bother to bring it up at all, I wonder?
Thanks for your explanation.
Yes, I’ve had sales people let me know of an upcoming sale, if I’m not in a hurry to buy. I was just curious if people, not Oprah’s color, had similar encounters without any trouble.
“No reason? Hello! Shes got a film coming out. Its all PR. Shes trying to sell tickets and make some money. Its always about the money.”
ahhh so right!
and the fact that I believe since she went to Sirius radio she’s not getting good ratings.
Don’t give her any press. I would love to see her go bye bye.
This is the best reason for the faux outrage. It’s a consistent pattern with the hollywoodenheads.
Oh, ok.
First- I acknowledge that Oprah has been charitable. She’s given away tons of stuff on her show too- all probably donated as tax write offs by the companies who supplied them. She is also a capable actress and I don’t find her personally reprehensible-just her politics. As a woman I don’t see ‘all that she has accomplished’. She no doubt took advantage of people being afraid to tell her no in some cases BECAUSE of her race. Hey- whatever you have to do, but-if you go to another country( was it her first time there?) and you can tell that the people waiting on you did not have ‘the best command of English’- why not write it off as that? No- she screams ‘racism’. The shopkeeper said not so- so it’s their word against the famous, black, Oprah who took offense. And so the thought police mentality crosses another border. Will Oprah accept their explanation and apology, or go on being a victim and offended forever? Her character is being exposed here-and her ‘accomplishments’ and charitable donations will be overshadowed by it-IMO.
And I still think it’s hideous and hypocritical for ANY Hollywood types to cruise around in private jets for hamburgers( Harrison Ford) or spend as much as most people don’t make in a year on a purse while bemoaning inequality on ANY level. That’s my take on it- I don’t expect universal agreement.
