SANTA FE The six months spanning last New Years Eve to the Fourth of July have been a time of loss for Gov. Susana Martinez and her husband, Chuck Franco.
The governors father, Jake, died after a long decline due to Alzheimers disease on Dec. 31.
In the months that followed, four of the governors six pets have died all due to cancer.
Martinez sat in the living room of the private residence wing of the Governors Mansion this week, the patio doors open to the yard her dogs used to romp in, to talk about something that has nothing to do with state government and that cuts across political party lines: the difficult decision to put down a beloved pet.
If youre a dog or a cat person, you know what its like to come home from the vets office to an empty house.
When I met Chuck, I had a lab, a Dalmatian and an Alaskan malamute, and a king-sized bed, and all three of them slept with me, she told me. When we got married, I told him, youll have to figure this out.

BTW, regarding getting another one too soon, a vet technician said when the time is right, a needy pet will find you.
I would suggest if she gets new pets, she change the diet of her animals. At some point you got to open your eyes.
I’d be thinking along the lines of environment. Lung cancer makes me think of radon.
With all of the talk about genetics and possible modifications, the thought of giving our companions longer lives is very attractive to me. On the other hand, nothing quite teaches a child about that bleak aspect of life than just such a death.
I was kinda thinking imported from China pet food.
She needs to look at both dietary and environmental causes. And, if it were me, I’d be thinking about getting myself and family checked over, too.
