A Spanish man died Friday shortly after winning a beer-drinking competition, local media reported.
Joaquin Alcaraz Gracia started vomiting not long after he won the competition in Murcia's Gea y Truyois district, media reported.
To win, contestants had to drink as many litre-glasses of beer as they could in 20 minutes.
According to media reports, Gracia drank six litres.
"Then he just started to vomit without stopping and never spoke again," Antonio Alcaraz told the Spanish newspaper Hoy.
Gracia, 45, was described by emergency officials as "obese."
The municipality's vice-president, Pedro Rodriguez, told Hoy that Gracia vomited a lot, but then was sleeping and snoring.
However, Gracia wasn't sleeping, he suffered a heart attack and died in hospital a short time later.
The mayor defended the competition to Hoy as a long tradition, adding that the precise cause of Gracia's death hadn't been determined.
Wow. Never saw that coming.
Could they tell what he had for dinner?
I hate it when that happens.
I have always thought those eating and drinking competitions were a bad idea. Actually a very bad idea.
And now ya’ll know why we never invited that sumbitch over here.
Play stupid games... RIP.
Not exactly a “hold muh beer” story but same end result.
Soooo.. get gored by bulls or bloat to death banging brew down..?
Any other choices? Not on the top of my viewing or bucket list. :-)
6 liters, what’s that... a gallon and half or so?
Two things come to mind, blood sausage and lutefisk.. beyond that, most everything else passed the old tonsils.. I’m not big on dark ale.. but I’m a man, I can learn. Woof.
It’s 17 beers in 20 minutes. Seems strange the alcohol would have killed him.
I agree, I don’t really get the point either. Well, I guess in this case it was, “Pig out and die”.
Drink that much of anything and you’ll puke.
Unless puking caused an embolism or stroke or something it probably is a good thing... gets much of the alcohol out before it can be absorbed. Then again I’m not a doctor and I have no idea what I’m talking about.
Right on. I don't let that stop me either.
My feeling is don’t go looking for convoluted explanations when simple ones are right there and are far more likely. Chances are dude died of acute alcohol poisoning. That’s where I’d place my bets, anyway.
Some people really know how to have a good time.
