At nearby Gray Tennessee a treasure trove of 4.6 to 7 million years old fossils are being carefully excavated. Among the fossils are the shells of painted turtles much like the red eared sliders in your photo.
I paddle my kayak on nearby Fort Patrick Henry Lake where they are commonly hauled out just like the picture you took. As Stephen Gould said, evolution is punctuated by change with long periods of stability

Also present are fossil snapping turtles and land dwelling box turtles also much like those of today.

Beautiful! I’ve seen a similar arrangement of deceased tree in the water with turtles on it.
Bryan and I saw it when we were hiking at Hinkley Lake in Ohio.
They were too far off to get the perfect picture that you took, but we still enjoyed seeing them.
