What top three movies do you think do you think didn't live up to all their hype?
Out of Africa sucked.
The English Patient sucked.
I never saw Reds, but Warren Beatty sucks
Poster aside, I do respect your opinion. I know I have my list of disliked movies.
I thought the Mask was excellent for what it was.
Then, there was Titanic III.
So I guess no Zero Dark Thirty. That bad? Everyone I talk to says must see. Same director as Hurt Locker? I might have to skip.
The Lord of the Rings? That would be 3 movies at once. Lots of hype. They did a good job of visualizing Middle-Earth, but the characters were (mostly) poor imitations, when not outright caricatures.
Independence Day
A damn fine film.
And I will give Clooney kudos for Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Hunt for red october is still the best depiction of cold war sub life there is.
Bogart’s Return to Casablanca, really, really sucked!

But wait, you know, it did live up to its hype.
It was soul-shattering ... especially that stock footage at the beginning. It really got to me. I sometimes wonder how different my life might have been if I had never seen it.
Every movie that has won the Oscar for Best Movie for the past 30 years.
Two films like that (under rated and low budget) come to mind : Breaking Away and The Endless Summer.
It all starts with the story and script, to me. Low budget means that script better be good because they don’t have millions for CGI that is so glitzy and addictive to 80 IQ audiences.

Out of all the movies, I can only really recall the ‘bar scene’ and “Luke, I am your father”.
The rest, I have rightly forgotten.

I'd toss in What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Who remembers the Chinatown sequel titled: “Chinatown - Sister or Daughter?”
I agree with you in regards to The Aviator (see my post #14). Having said that, he would not have been my first choice for the part. If you saw Captain America: The First Avenger, Dominic Cooper played Howard Stark, a character loosely based on Hughes, and was very convincing in the role. He'd have made a better Hughes than DiCaprio.
For that matter, Robert Downey, who plays the notional son of Howard Stark in the Iron Man movies, would have also made a better Hughes.
Gangs of New York was a *great* movie...except for every scene that wimpy little weasel was in.
