There are many, many complex factors that go into violent crime and guns death statistics. It’s all a very interesting topic to research, but I’ve noticed that taken in its totality, not in selectively-cut segments as we typically see in the news, is that the overall violent crime rates are not really affected one way or another by rates of private firearm ownership.

I suspect that countries with strict gun control are oppressive in many other ways, since government can do whatever it wants without fear of consequences from the peasants.

That sounds real to me.

When you think about it, it's the criminal class that is responsible for crime - therefore, why would the rate of gun ownership among the law-abiding affect what criminals do in any way?

One could say that there are liable to be less armed robberies and home invasions in areas where the populace is heavily armed, but that wouldn't necessarily affect other types of crime rates.

Makes total sense. Being in an environment where you're actively suppressed from having the means to resist your oppressors would tend to drive people into despair and hopelessness.

Given that the former Soviet countries tend to have the highest suicide rates and the strictest gun restrictions you might think so. The study, though, concludes that there's no hard correlation or relationship.

US homicide statistics (broken down by race) do tend to back up the assertion that blacks (on average) commit more murders per capita than other racial groups, but the real numbers aren't even close to 50x.
