Gwyneth Paltrow says she starves her kids of carbohydrates: "We're left with that specific hunger"
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 3/12/13 | Daniel Bates

Posted on 03/12/2013 1:49:02 PM PDT by SilvieWaldorfMD

She has tried the macrobiotic diet, the kale and lemon cleanse and only eating salad for days on end. But now Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that she has begun inflicting her obsessions with food on her own children - by starving them of carbohydrates.

Miss Paltrow, 40, said that that she avoids feeding pasta, bread or rice to Apple, eight, and Moses, six, because it is bad for them, even though they are left ‘craving’ the food.

Her decision was based on the fact that everyone in her house - including husband Chris Martin - is supposedly intolerant of gluten, dairy and chicken’s eggs.

Miss Paltrow’s comments are an admission that her habit of going for the latest fad diet is filtering down to how she behaves as a mother.

She has in the past told how she snacks on almonds when she is hungry rather than cave in and have a proper meal. She spent her 20s on the macrobiotic diet during which time she ate mostly vegetables and beans and chewed her food more thoroughly than usual.

In her new cookbook, called ‘It’s All Good,’ which is released next month, Miss Paltrow devotes an entire chapter to grains but is deeply sceptical about them. She writes: ‘Every single nutritionist, doctor and health-conscious person I have ever come across seems to concur that (gluten) is tough on the system and many of us are at best intolerant of it and at worst allergic to it.'

Could you describe what you think is happening that allowed you to lose 5 lbs in 4 days? Is it good for you?

I hope Gwenyth is at least on iron supplements for the anemia after cutting out red meat or fish and dark green leafy veggies as a result. She obviously has an eating disorder that is manifesting itself across the family and needs to be seriously counseled by health professionals.

We could end up with Gwyneth’s anti-obesity soul mates overlording our health care system’s dictates on diet.

Maybe New York city should put Gwyneth in after Queen Mother Bloomers retires as their diet overlord.

The question of what constitutes "moderate" can generate pages of comments here. Celiac disease is very serious, and it is quite the compliment to our food industry that so many products exist today for those suffer from this disease or are truly gluten sensitive.

The Atkins diet is really nothing more than a low calorie diet in disguise. Eating vegetables and fruits over high calorie and less nutritious beverages, snacks, and convenience foods, is certainly more desirable, but weight gain for the vast majority of people is all about total calories consumed vs. total calories burned.

I believe there are a lot more people who believe they are gluten intolerant/sensitive than truly are. Trends like this tend to be that way, and for some reason, the Hollywood types seem to be the ones leading the charge from one diet fad or fear to the other. Paltrow is into some weird stuff and I find her insufferable. I think she was the one saying we should be filtering her urine and using it. Good grief, the real tragedy is that these people subject their kids to this idiocy. I really feel for them.

I’ve been thinking I was lactose intolerant. I’ve been eliminating out of my diet to see if I got better. I eliminated dairy (including lattes) or took lactaid and I got better.

I decided to try a latte using almond milk. I immediately got sick. It looks like the coffee was actually the culprit.

Been feeling much better since just taking out the coffee.

I always thought Carbs were necessary for kids, to fuel their bodies because they have an active lifestyle (or at least they’re suppose to).

Why did she name her kid Apple knowing full well she named her after something that has those horrible carbohydrates? Huh, answer that one. Apples have about 30 carbs and a large meal sized salad would have about the same. Sorry, Gwenie but everything except water has carbs. Starting out, meat doesn’t have any but the first pinch of seasoning and you’re looking at a couple of them.

Agreed. These extreme diets are causing so many children to not develop properly. Children’s growing brains need carbs. Nothing wrong with limiting sugars and high calories but depriving children will only make them crave them more. They’ll have such horrible diets when they get out from under their wacky parents’ control.

The lactose in milk is changed into lactic acid in yogurt which doesn’t give the tummy trouble. Eating while drinking milk will also help.

Apple is a popular name for a girl in Asia and Europe. How is it worse that Cherrie or Daisy?

It is certainly better than Latwanda or Sharikka

Most people eat way too many carbs. Reducing carbs is generally good for most Americans who are overweight. I’ve reduced gluten in my diet and feel better. Don’t know why just know it helped.

Comparing me to this wacko is ridiculous and only shows your high level of ignorance.

Might be the caffeine in the coffee. Have a coworker who can drink decaf but regular causes problems.

So, you do eat carbs, just a reduced amount. Great. That makes you different than Paltrow, who claims to avoid them altogether, and has decided to "starve" her children of them. Only a moron deprives growing children of carbohydrates. It's apparent the only person comparing her to you, is you. Instead of looking for a fight, maybe you should learn to read and comprehend.

Reducing calorie consumption is generally good for Americans who are overweight. The bottom line is calories. Same as it ever was.

But beer, lovely beer, has carbohydrates. A cardiologist friend of mine once said "A sandwich in every bottle" when I handed her a beer. ;)

Carbs are necessary for anyone - it's where they come from that is the culprit. I try to stay away from any breads or ice cream (I said TRY) - and get them from vegetables and fruit. I still would rather eat junk, but I enjoy weighing less than I did last year too much to go back to my old ways. Plus I can do long runs know without the joint problems I used to have.

I still think Paltrow is an idiot though. It's one thing to keep kids from eating junk, but quite another to make them suffer because she is on the new eating plan du jour.
